Position Function 
 
This position will support the mission of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Safety (FSIL). The incumbent will provide technical support to FSIL research projects, develop proposals and research projects related to emerging global food safety topics, and support FSIL’s communication and knowledge sharing efforts. 
 
The incumbent will collaborate with FSIL’s director and associate director to oversee the technical activities of research projects, which may include travel to research implementation sites, engagement in research team meetings, evaluation of lab safety protocols, and review of data and manuscripts. The individual will also contribute to the FSIL research portfolio by developing research proposals, designing small projects to address emerging food safety topics, and writing review papers. The incumbent is also expected to contribute to the technical design and ideation of webinars, blog posts, and other communication products. 
This is a full-time position and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a 1-year appointment with possible extension. Future possible extensions depend on funding and performance.
 
Anticipated Division of Time 
Specific position responsibilities include (i) provide scientific support to projects funded by FSIL (30%); (ii) engage in research on global food safety, including data analyses (30%); (iii) assist with emerging FSIL program needs (30%); and (iv) contribute to FSIL communications efforts (10%).
 Project Scientific Support (30%) 
  • Participate in meetings with project teams and monitor in-country research activities as needed 
  • Provide technical reviews of data generated by projects
  • Support researchers with statistical analyses 
  • Review lab SOPs and safety protocols
  • Engage in technical writing and review of manuscripts 

 Food Safety Research (30%) 
  • Develop research proposals 
  • Design and implement small research projects on emerging global food safety topics 
  • Research and write review papers, white papers, and other documents to support and promote Food Safety Innovation Lab priorities 

Assist with emerging FSIL program needs (30%)
  • Stay apprised of international food safety research, programming, and opportunities 
  • Network with individuals and organizations that have food safety and food security interests that are aligned with FSIL programming
  • Develop research proposals 
  • Develop resources (webinars, fact sheets, etc.) to scale up the impact of FSIL research project results on food safety practices and policies

 Communications (10%) 
  • Technical design, ideation, and participation in webinars 
  • Non-technical writing, including blog posts, fact sheets, and other communications products

Requirements
  • Ph.D. in food or dairy science, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics or related fields and experience in molecular biology, bacterial genetics, pathogenic bacteriology and/or food microbiology. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent microbiology and molecular biology skills; quantitative and statistics skills.
  • Experience in food safety and food microbiology. 
  • Interest in global food safety research and outreach. 
  • A valid NYS driver’s license is also required. 

Supervision 
Direction will be received from Dr. Randy Worobo, Professor. 
 
Supervision Exercised 
Functional supervision may be exercised over graduate and undergraduate students involved in FSIL activities.
