Summary of Job Duties:

A Post-Doctoral Fellow position is available in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will participate in laboratory-based or population-based research for the purpose of obtaining advanced training under the direction of a senior member of the staff. The goal is to provide advanced training and practical research experience to doctoral-level scientists who are in the beginning stages of their professional research careers. At the same time, the Fellow provides a service to UAMS. This position primarily consists of conducting relevant research studies for the respective department. There is also the responsibility of recording data and reporting on the studies, with a high probability of presenting the report to a senior staff member. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will take on research studies relevant to department program needs under the direction of senior investigators. Within the research responsibilities lies the task of managing and supervising any Assistants, Technicians, etc. All department-specific responsibilities will be determined within the respective department.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related field required.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in conducting specialized laboratory research under the general guidance of faculty members, or work in support of the educational programs of the campus.

  • Culture cell lines, maintenance, and feeding of cultures, treatment of cultures per the experimental protocol, harvest of cells, isolate protein or nucleic acid to analyze and perform cell-based assay

  • RNA, DNA, and protein analysis.  This includes the isolation of protein, and nucleic acids, preparation of samples for proteomic and genomic analysis, and real-time PCR.

  • Preparation of experimental design, project scheduling, data acquisition, data management and analysis, and preparation of written project summaries including graphs, tables, and PowerPoint presentations and statistical analyses of data collected. 

  • Prepare written documentation of all procedures.

  • Perform animal husbandry, colony maintenance, genotyping, survival surgery, real-time imaging, drug injection, tissue harvesting, and xenografting.

  • Perform other molecular biology experiments.  This includes mutagenesis of plasmids, cloning of genes, and purification of proteins.

  • Coaching/teaching junior staff, technicians, summer research undergraduate students, graduate students as well as clinical fellows.

  • Order supplies as needed, and keep equipment in working order.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.
