Job Summary: Under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee, The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the Ph.D. or other doctoral degree. 


Additional Department Summary: Applications are invited for a 2-year (with the possibility of renewal) Postdoctoral Research Associate as part of a research project under the auspices of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) new Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH). CIROH, headquartered at the University of Alabama (UA) Alabama Water Institute (AWI), consists of a consortium of 28 academic institutions, non-profit organizations, and government and industry partners bringing together a powerful team of hydrologic researchers across the United States and Canada. CIROH’s research activities are tightly linked to research to operation activities at the NOAA National Water Center, co-located on the UA campus in Tuscaloosa. The position involves research under the CIROH Flood Inundation Modeling and Mapping project led by Drs. Sagy Cohen and Hongxing Liu at the Department of Geography. The project goals include the development of novel techniques and an improved understanding of channel, floodplain, and urban hydraulic characteristics and their impact on flood inundation predictions.
This position is focused on advancing remote sensing applications in flood mapping.


Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in one or more disciplines associated with geography, environmental science, civil and environmental engineering, or related discipline or research experience.

Skills and Knowledge: A demonstrated high level of achievement in related research productivity and academic writing.


Preferred Qualifications: One or more of the following: geospatial (GIS and remote sensing) analysis and programming, hydrological modeling, flood remote sensing, modeling and analysis.
