Lab Technician

Class Description

The purpose of this class is to provide assistance in the day to day maintenance of a specialized instructional environment. Position(s) supports Science lecture and lab sections, and may be required to work at multiple campuses to support instructional needs.  Scheduled hours are: Monday – Thursday 12:00 – 8:30 pm and Friday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. Salaries are based upon position, education and years of experience.  

Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS for Lab Technician I:

High School diploma/GED including High School science OR 14 College Credits and one College Science with lab AND one year related experience OR two semesters part time academic Lab Prep experience. The Lab Technician may be required to work and/or assist on different campuses.  

Lab Technician II: Associates degree with one year full time experience as an Instructional Aide, Lab Assistant, Lab Technician or other directly experience.   Successful completion of at least 12 credits of college lab science. Proficient computer skills and experience with all Microsoft software applications. The Lab Technician may be required to work and/or assist on one of the other campuses as needed. 

Lab Technician III: Associates degree with successful completion of at least 12 credits of basic sciences from an accredited academic institution. Two (2) years of experience as a technician or student lab aide in a research, clinical, instructional, industrial laboratory or responsible for independent class work in a laboratory.  Required skills include: excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills; computer skills in Microsoft Applications; attention to detail with effective follow-up practices and ability to handle multiple priorities; and problem solving skills. This position will require some travel to various campuses as deemed necessary.

For higher level positions within this classification the required education and years of experience increase. Applicants may submit applications for Lab Technician II or III commensurate with additional education and experience.  

Class Specific Essential Duties

CLASS SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Operate laboratory equipment, identify equipment that is not functioning properly and provide routine maintenance.
  2. Inventories lab equipment and supplies, identifies lab needs and purchases lab supplies.
  3. Complies with CCBC purchasing manual and keeps financial records.
  4. Conducts usual laboratory activities such as mixing chemicals, transferring bacterial cultures, using a microscope, using basic scientific instrumentation, mixing and preparing microbiological media.
  5. Sets up experiments to prepare for laboratory instruction and assists students and faculty in assigned area.
  6. Maintain all records pertinent to daily operations.

Position Specific Essential Duties

POSITION SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Assist with the training and distribution of assignments to Work Study Students and/or Part Time Associates who support the Lab Tech function and programs.
  2. Collaborates regularly with technicians at other campuses to develop common approaches to lab support and common student lab experience.
  3. Follows safety and Environmental protocols for the protection of students, faculty and staff.
  4. Works to improve lab skills and knowledge in order to support laboratory instruction in all disciplines.
