New York University (NYU) Berlin is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach a course entitled Expressive Culture: Film. The course corresponds to a film studies class taught at NYU New York that critically engages with the medium to look at artistic expression in light of social and historical contexts. The NYU Berlin version focuses on German cinema by examining it through a specific lens. While we are open to suggestions for the exact area of concentration, we envisage a course that provides an introduction to German cinema as well as formal methods for its interpretation, and also explores the relationship between artistic expression and aspects of political and social life.

The course is taught in English and will be offered during both the Spring 2023 and Summer 2023 terms. The spring semester runs from January 25 to May 15, 2023, with a week-long break from March 13-19. In this term, the class meets once per week for four and a half hours. During the summer semester, which runs from May 23 to June 29, 2023, the class meets twice a week for four hours and forty five minutes. The duration of the lessons includes time for film screenings.

Candidates should be available to teach during both terms, have a track record of academic publications in the field and be passionate about teaching a very diverse cohort of undergraduate students. As the course is open to students from any major, the course content and pedagogy should ensure accessibility for a variety of students. Qualifications

• Doctorate in a relevant discipline.

• Record of research and publications in the field.

• A minimum of three years teaching experience at university level.

• Fluency in English and teaching experience in English.

• German work-permit and tax number at the time of application, covering the entire period of the employment.

• Preference will be given to candidates who have been doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in the US and/or have international teaching experience.
