Position Summary

Assistant Technical Director of the scientific core for the Autophagy, Inflammation, and Metabolism (AIM) NIH-funded Center of Biomedical Research Excellence, University of New Mexico Health Science Center. AIM Center is a multi-investigator high-intensity research program focused on autophagy as a fundamental mechanism and its role in a spectrum of diseases. 
The candidate will direct and carry out daily operations of the service-oriented core centered on high content microscopy quantification of autophagy, inflammation and metabolic parameters. Candidates should enjoy teaching and work exceptionally well with collaborators and users. Experience with running a core facility and complex instrumentation is preferred.
Candidate will:

  • Help Technical Director manage and functionally operate a core scientific resource that provides technical services to UNM AIM COBRE and affiliated research groups;
  • Ensure exceptional service to the research community in a customer-oriented, friendly, timely, economical, and efficient manner.
  • Operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment with impeccable documentation, work standards, develop new protocols and update existing protocols.
    Work Performed
    • Support the scientific output of the Autophagy Core through assisting researchers, including principal investigators, postdoctoral and predoctoral trainees, research specialists and technicians.
    • Assist in coordination of all Core activities and scientific collaborations. The Assistant Technical Director will help consult with UNM AIM investigators to develop new research applications in autophagy imaging by microscopy and flow cytometry, to support new grant applications, and to assist with data analysis and interpretation.
    • Help manage annual operating budgets for the facility.
    • Train and instruct investigators within AIM scientific areas. Help to direct daily activities of all users, as well as the project management goals of the facility. Interact with Principal Investigators and source appropriate scientific literature necessary to provide exceptional service and to design experimental framework for clinical research. Utilize effective project and resource management needed for successful operation and service. Interact with users and assist in a courteous and professional manner.
    • Oversee instrumentation maintenance and modifications/updates as needed, and related supplies, reagents and equipment. Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and infection control regulations and standards.
    • Operate equipment; Oversee installation and maintenance; Design, evaluate, and modify laboratory protocols. Manage procedures through established protocols and develop and test protocols for new technical services.
    • Collect, analyze, and interpret data using core instruments. Manage data storage.
    • Gather and analyze core usage trends to determine short-term and long-term financial and organization implications. Implement changes, restructure and improve services for research community and improve the financial position of the facility in conjunction with faculty core leaders.
    • Interact with vendors and companies to provide timely service for existing instrumentation.
    • Contribute to facility development activities by ensuring the best financial interest for the AIM Center and AIM Core Facility.
    • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.     Equipment in the Facility:
    The core is equipped with two CelllInsight Cellomics high content imaging systems, an Amnis Imagestream imaging flow cytometer, two Agilent Seahorse metabolic analyzers, a Zeiss LSM 900 confocal microscope, and additional smaller instruments. The core will soon acquire an Isoplexis high content single cell protein analysis machine.

    Conditions of Employment
    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

    Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

    Preferred Qualifications Required
    BA or BS with at least 2 year’s experience in a laboratory
    Ability to manage multiple research projects
    Ability to foster a collaborative and cooperative work environment
    Ability to provide consistent and superior service
    Ability to set up, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot technologically advanced scientific research and/or test equipment.
    Preferred
    PHD or Master’s with publication track record
    Familiarity with autophagy
    Experience with image analysis and/or flow cytometry
    Experience with bioinformatics analysis of large datasets
