The University of Dayton, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is seeking a dynamic faculty member with a specialization in design and/or manufacturing at the rank of tenure track assistant professor to begin August 16, 2023.

The University of Dayton (UD) Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) has an opportunity to join a community deeply committed to faculty success, inclusive excellence, to education at all levels, and to collaboration in teaching within the department, across the University, and externally. Locally, the Dayton area offers unique opportunities for engineering faculty to collaborate with researchers at the Air Force Research Laboratory located at Wright-Patterson AFB, the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), and industry partners. The successful candidate will teach courses in the MAE department with a design and/or manufacturing focus that may include Mechanical Design, Multi-disciplinary Design, and Manufacturing Processes. Additionally, the successful candidate is expected to engage and lead students in externally sponsored research and collaborate within the department, across the university, and externally.

The MAE Department offers a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering. Within the Bachelor’s degree, concentrations are available in aerospace and energy systems. Additionally, minors are available in biomechanics and robotic systems. The Department also offers Master of Science and Doctorate degrees. The Department currently has 800 undergraduate students, 200 graduate students, 24 full-time faculty members, and a number of adjunct faculty. Minimum Qualifications:
  • ABD in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field nearing completion.
  • Record of scholarly research.
  • Potential for teaching excellence, particularly employing active and experiential learning pedagogies.
  • Effective written communication skills.
  • Articulated commitment to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Completed Ph.D. by the start of the contract.
  • Potential to establish an externally-funded research program.
  • Successful experience in one or more of the following:
    • Mechanical design or manufacturing engineering in a professional capacity.
    • Teaching courses in mechanical design and/or manufacturing.
    • Engaging individuals from socially and culturally diverse communities.
    • Community, university or professional service.
    • Experiential and active learning strategies to foster and maintain student engagement, successful use of learning resources, including technology and/or active learning strategies.
    • Research grant and/or contract applications
    • Postdoctoral research
    • Mentoring undergraduate student research
  • Articulated commitment to breadth of education, including educating the whole person in the Catholic and Marianist tradition.
  • Effective oral communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Effective classroom management skills

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide.
