Provide visionary leadership, and strategic direction for the evolution of the STEM Education (STEM Ed) Department. Lead a community of educators to envision, develop, and implement industry leading, top quality in-person and digital STEM learning experiences that center equity for youth and family, community, and school audiences. Lead and direct strategic and annual planning for the department that aligns with the mission, vision, and values of the Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM), and the strategies, and principles of the Science Equity and Education Division (SEED). Develop and manage STEM Ed staff, budgets, resources, and operations to progress project and program goals. Envision future direction for SEED operations including strategic planning, budgets, systems integration, and resource management.

Work collaboratively across SMM in leadership and group roles for cross- and inter-departmental initiatives, senior-level strategy groups, and cross divisional/department projects. Expand museum audiences to reflect the ethnic diversity of Saint Paul and the Metro by engaging with virtual/in-person and internal/external stakeholders to optimize the reach and impact of museum programs for local, state, regional, and national audiences. Change demographic participation in STEM Ed programs through collaborations, staff representation, prioritized audience partnerships, and improved accessibility. Build action oriented relationships with partners around the Twin Cities metro who will help further the impact and relevance of existing STEM Ed Programs and build revolutionary new ones. Be a leader across the institution to develop learning opportunities that center equity in all programs and audience engagement specifically focused on addressing the opportunity gap in Minnesota public education to expand experiences that translate STEM concepts into facilitated learning experiences that are inclusive, culturally relevant, engaging, and educational for a broad range of learners.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead strategic planning for the department. Align department plans, resources, and program efforts with SEED and SMM’s strategic goals and strategies.

Lead and/or inform SMM strategic planning, new project/program origination, and cross cutting initiatives.

Develop and coordinate culturally relevant and emergent audience research and evaluation efforts to inform strategic planning and program/project management.

Provide direct supervision for STEM Ed Managers and staff for cross-divisional initiatives/projects.

Work with the management team to develop, mentor, and manage department staff to achieve high performance while meeting the needs of the mission as a community of educators/learners.

Serve as Principal Investigator, Project Director, or Cost Center Manager for select projects and grants including School Network Initiative.

Develop, nurture, and sustain critical relationships with internal/external partners and stakeholders that contribute the vision, experience development, engagement, inclusion, and access for STEM Ed/SEED/SMM audiences. Lead development and contribute to grants and development proposals.

Consult for and with internal and external collaborators on best practices for facilitated STEM learning experience in informal/formal learning environments and in-person/virtual strategies.

Direct development of sustainable department budgets. Work closely with Cost Center Managers to track and manage financial performance of programs and projects.
Work closely with department managers to track and manage program/project work to best align and maximize use of physical and human resources to meet department, division, and museum goals.

Direct the implementation of information and project management systems to seek improved efficiency, build audience, and optimize program impact.

Work closely with the VP SEED to track and manage financial performance of thedivision. Contribute to SMM budget/financial work groups and systems implementation.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:


Education: Expert knowledge of best practices for facilitated learning experience in formal and informal environments, Demonstrated knowledge of research and implementation of STEM equity and inclusion best practices. Demonstrated knowledge of STEM trends, practices and standards for local, state, and national initiatives. Demonstrated knowledge of age appropriate content and pedagogy for preschool, school age and family audiences. Demonstrated knowledge for design and delivery of professional development programs for adult learners - educators. Demonstrated knowledge of non-profit best practices in the field of non profit management/leadership.


Experience: Demonstrated experience directing a large team (20 – 100) of educators and supporting staff to develop and deliver education programs for a wide range of audiences and program models. Ability to work effectively in a non-profit organization and culture. Experience providing strategic direction and planning for multi audience program and projects at local, state, and national levels
The salary range for this role is 103k-108k

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $103,000.00 - $108,000.00 per year
