Position Description:

We are seeking to appoint a ‘second-in-command’ post-doctoral researcher as part of a growing research team at the University of Iowa to study Cognitive system impact and plasticity in neurosurgery patients. The role is jointly funded by the Dept of Neurosurgery and the Iowa Neuroscience Institute. The role will involve coordinating and supporting the volunteer neurosurgery patient research (lead supervisor: Prof and Vice Chair for Research Chris Petkov), including patient testing and the analysis and reporting of cutting-edge approaches with the patients. These may include unique single neuron or laminar recordings, fMRI/EEG, electrical stimulation and developing ultrasound brain stimulation. Treatment options are changing, and it is important to assess the impact and plasticity of the cognitive system, including during laser or radiofrequency treatment for epilepsy and to minimize the impact on memory and language by neurosurgical treatment.

The goal of the research and partnership is to directly assist medical science by providing insights on neuronal mechanisms, circuits and networks that support cognition (Rocchi, Oya et al., Neuron 2020; Balezeau et al., Nature Neuroscience 2021). The research is part of a successful international partnership between Newcastle University (UK) and the University of Iowa (USA), and exchange trips with the UK team are possible. The research is relevant for improving diagnostic and treatment options for neurological and neurosurgical patients, including individuals with amnesia, epilepsy, and communication disorders.

The ideal candidate would have a strong academic record, leadership experience and strong, programming (Matlab/Python), analytical, presenting and writing skills. The successful applicant has the opportunity to receive training in state-of-the-art neurobiological technologies and will receive support with career development in a highly collegial environment located in a part of the world with very high quality of life.
