Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes has an opening for a full-time Research Assistant Professor position.

Nature of Work

The Barbara Davis Research Division seeks an exceptional data scientist at the level of Research Assistant Professor. The Research Division is focused on understanding cellular, molecular, and genetic mechanisms of type 1 diabetes, using human samples, and animal, cell, and organoid models. The individual will conduct research using bioinformatics theory and methods in a variety of -omics areas, including, but not limited to, single cell RNA sequencing, single cell ATAC sequencing, bulk sequencing, and spatial transcriptomics. The individual will provide analysis support for the BDC research division, and will work to analyze data for publications and grants, design and maintain new software, and provide educational support and mentorship for the section’s trainees.

Examples of Work

Responsibilities of the Assistant Research Professor position within the BDC Research Division will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Manage the development of novel analysis methods and software for -omics sequencing modalities and emerging sequencing methods
  • Develop and teach workshops and short courses to promote bioinformatics competency within the sections
  • Provide informatic analysis and experimental design for -omics efforts in the section
  • Provide suggestions and feedback on improving experiments based on pilot sequencing projects
  • Provide office hours for trainees and curate shared resource banks, preferably on github,  to promote bioinformatics accessibility within the section
  • Collaborate with faculty to obtain external funding and publish high-impact manuscripts

Working Conditions

This position is 100% FTE involving clinical care and pharmaceutical research.  Schedule primarily Monday – Friday, but occasional weekend or extended hours required for research studies

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $105,000 to $150,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • PhD in Genetics, Bioinformatics, or related field
  • At least 1 year experience post PhD
  • Demonstrated proficiency analyzing large omic datasets including single cell and bulk RNA-seq, single cell and bulk ATAC-seq, long read sequencing datasets, and ChIP-seq.
  • Experience with popular programming languages used in data science, including R, Python, and bash, and popular software suites used for scRNA-seq analysis, including Seurat, Scanpy, and Cell Ranger, bulk RNA-seq such as DESeq2 and EdgeR, and scATAC seq such as ArchR.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledgeable about many single cell analysis methods Pseudotime methods such as RNA velocity and slingshot, differential expression analysis that controls for sample (eg MAST with random effect), and integration of long and short read data.
  • Experience with version control and code repositories using Github.
  • Experience with reproducibility and pipeline building (eg Snakemake).
  • Familiarity with ization platforms like Docker.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring students
  • Proficiency generating and maintaining an open source web application to host single cell sequencing datasets.
  • In-depth knowledge of immunology/autoimmunity or diabetes
  • Knowledgeble about wet bench techniques including Single-cell RNA sequencing using Smart-seq2 and 10x genomics, single cell tissue dissociation, FACs sorting, PCR, gel electrophoresis, RT-PCR, qRT-PCR, and RNAscope in situ hybridization

  • Must be able to diagnose, troubleshoot and solve technical problems that can arise from a variety of technical assays.
