Description of Work
The Soil Health and Carbon Farming post-doctoral research associate will contribute to the integrated research and extension land-grant mission of the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR), as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy. This 12-month (calendar year) position will be 100% research. Ph.D. students with an anticipated Fall 2022 completion date are welcome to apply.
The successful applicant will join a team investigating and assessing the Soil Health status of long-term cropping systems in Nebraska (organic and conventional), and in particular studying aspects of soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics. Contribute to field and laboratory-based studies of mineralization, soil organic carbon sequestration, and stabilization to inform soil health status of diverse agricultural systems and will help to improve the sustainability and resilience of agricultural systems. This position will work in contrasting Nebraska long-term agricultural fields (organic vs. conventional). This work will develop the necessary knowledge and structural basis to support the Soil Health Program and will allow us to identify fields with robust legacy of building healthy soils that could serve as demonstration sites. Also, it will allow us to identify management practices that are suitable for building healthy soils within diverse contexts and edaphic conditions. The successful applicant will lead and collaborate on analysis and publication of results, new proposals, and scientific/community outreach. In addition to research and career development, a portion of this position (10%) is devoted to Soil Health program events coordination support.
In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.
