Position Summary
The Global Research Institute (GRI) at William & Mary invites applications for a two-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Security and Foreign Policy. GRI brings high quality researchers to W&M, supports intellectual diversity, and provides mentored research opportunities for undergraduate students, especially those from under-represented groups. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will have the opportunity to work with GRI’s research labs and the GRI Security and Foreign Policy Initiative. The Fellow will join the vibrant intellectual community at GRI, a multidisciplinary hub that brings together academics, practitioners, and students to conduct applied research on pressing global issues.
In addition to pursuing their own research, the GRI Post-Doctoral Fellow in Security and Foreign Policy will have responsibilities related to the GRI Security and Foreign Policy Initiative , including supporting a fall and spring convening that will engage both academics and policy practitioners. The Fellow will also teach one course per year during the two years of the award. Throughout the fellowship period, the Fellow will work alongside other Post-Doctoral fellows at GRI and participate in a professional development series that will include: how to pursue funded research; how to organize an undergraduate research lab; how to navigate the publishing process; how to make research accessible to practitioners; and how to improve classroom teaching, among other topics. Fellows will receive an annual salary of $55,000, shared office space at GRI, library access, and other benefits including comprehensive health insurance. The position also comes with over $33,000 in funds to conduct research and hire student collaborators.
We welcome applications from political scientists, historians, and public policy scholars or those in related fields whose research examines international security and/or foreign policy issues, including, but not limited to, grand strategy, U.S. foreign relations, diplomacy, causes of war, alliances, nuclear weapons, economic and military assistance, and war termination. Successful applicants will engage seriously with debates about the future of U.S. security and foreign policy.
Applicants must have received a recent or current Ph.D., or will be awarded one prior to beginning the fellowship. The two-year fellowship appointment will begin August 10, 2023. If the Post-Doctoral candidate is successful in securing external funding, the position may be extended beyond the two-year period. The successful candidate is expected to be in residence at GRI for the duration of the fellowship.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must
  • Have a PhD by the time appointment begins (August 10, 2023) in political science, history, public policy, or another relevant field and obtained the degree within the past five years
  • Excellent academic preparation
  • Be engaged in research on international security, foreign policy, or related international topics
  • Have strong organizational and communication skills
  • Be able to relocate to the Williamsburg, VA area
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working collaboratively
  • Track record of publications in peer-reviewed outlets and/or preparation and presentation of conference papers
  • Experience writing and securing external grant
  • Experience teaching or mentoring undergraduate students
