Job Description

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR NOTICE OF FILING

Job no: 269227-FA
Work type: Faculty-Full Time
Location: Madison
Categories: Faculty
Department:DEPT-A5312

Job Summary:

The Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (WID) in collaboration with the Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics (BMI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are searching for a tenure-track Assistant Professor dedicated to subspace clustering and data reduction and their development in biomedical research. The position is a C-basis, 9-month per year appointment.
Contemporary biomedical research demands new machine-learning approaches, data-science techniques, algorithms, and strategies to create more effective tools to learn from growing data resources. Subspace clustering and data reduction provide an especially promising research frontier which recognizes that signals in high-dimensional data may be resolved and leveraged from low-dimensional representations.
In collaboration, the WID and BMI department seek to expand their research and training programs in subspace clustering and data reduction in the context of a rich biomedical research environment. Research opportunities abound, including with data from electronic health records, genomic repositories, or imaging resources, all of which might inform prediction for clinical outcomes or treatment strategies; as well as data on molecular structures that might guide predictions of protein binding or other molecular characteristics, for example.
The successful applicant for this position will join a vibrant academic department (BMI) and an exciting research institute (WID), establish strong subspace clustering and data reduction research program motivated by high-impact problems in biomedical research, contribute to training and mentoring in this domain, engage in collaborative activity within the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) or with national and international efforts, and engage in professional service appropriate to the faculty rank.

Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will engage in the scholarly mission of BMI/WID in the domain of data reduction and subspace clustering. They will contribute to graduate training, develop a substantial sponsored research portfolio emphasizing both methodological research and collaborative interdisciplinary research, and support their unit, school, and scientific community through professional service.
70% Develop an independent research program in data reduction and subspace clustering and its application in health or biomedicine, with focus on advancing and deploying methodological tools in the biological, clinical, or public health sciences domain. The successful applicant will establish robust collaborations with investigators at UW-Madison and/or its partner institutions, develop a strong sponsored funding portfolio to support their research activities, and disseminate research findings at conferences and publishing in high-impact methodological and subject matter peer-reviewed journals appropriate to the area of research interest and application.
20% Teach courses, usually about one (1) graduate course per year; and train and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
10% Engage in professional and university service appropriate to the faculty rank.
