Full Job Description

Under the supervision of the Athletic Director and Head Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Coach, duties for the Athletic Academic Advisor and Assistant Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Coach will be responsible for assisting the head coach with managing and coaching the track and field program within the boundaries of the rules and regulations of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, the National Junior College Athletic Association and Dodge City Community College. Additionally, the Athletic Academic Advisor and Assistant Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Coach will be responsible for acting as contact with Dodge City Community College student athletes to conduct all academic advising, enrollment, degree auditing, monitoring of grades and academic achievement, and transfer guidance.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Assist the department with all assigned duties and solicit items for the Foundation Auction.
  • Attend all Athletic Department meetings and other College committees as assigned.
    Athletic Academic Advisor
  • Serves as academic advisor for student athletes on curriculum/academic program requirements at Dodge City Community College.
  • Serve as admissions point of contact for coaches and new students throughout the acceptance, enrollment, and registration process including aide when sending appropriate documentation.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with staff, faculty, division chairs, coaches and students in order to collaborate and communicate effectively to best serve the student athletes of Dodge City Community College.
  • Assess academic, career, and athletic needs of student athletes.
  • Provide personal academic counseling and advising regarding college course selection and enrollment and aiding student athletes through the registration process.
  • Assist students in choosing classes that will meet transfer eligibility requirements to ensure successful transfer of student athletes to their desired four-year institution.
  • Verify enrollment in correct classes for graduation purposes by conducting continuous degree audits for each student athlete.
  • Develop and maintain academic progress reporting systems and grade checks in addition to alert procedures for coaches, students, faculty, and the Athletic Director to ensure academic standards that comply with all NJCAA and KJCCC eligibility requirements.
  • Refer student athletes to educational services on campus including tutoring centers, the library, and grant programs with additional student success resources.
  • Provide students with advice and assistance to encourage retention, graduation, and transfer to achieve both their academic and athletic goals.
  • Serve as point of contact for transfer schools within regulated FERPA standards and guidelines.
  • Attend advisor training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.
    Assistant Men and Women’s Track & Field Coach
  • Assist to lead and develop the Men’s and Women’s Track and Field program.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of daily practice plans, schedule all games and scrimmages and obtain transportation and lodging for competition.
  • Knowledge and ability to recruit student athletes in accordance with NJCAA, KJCCC and College regulations and guidelines.
  • Assist with the establishment and maintenance of off-season program for athletes according to all NJCAA and KJCCC guidelines.
  • Assist with planning resistance and weight training principles, techniques, facilities and equipment.
  • Assist with the purchase, track, and upkeep all equipment inventory, prepare and maintain budget.
  • Assist to coordinate fundraising events through Athletic Director approval.
  • Promote the program through involvement within the community and Alumni Booster Association.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director and Head Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Coach.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Prior collegiate coaching and recruiting experience in the sport.
  • Knowledge of NJCAA and KJCCC rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work nights and evenings.
  • Experience working with education programs.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and effective advising documentation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to monitor and advise on all academic progress of student athletes.
  • Ability to work with staff members and team members.
  • Proven ability to work with diverse populations including traditional and non-traditional students.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree.
  • College head coaching experience.
  • Educational or experienced background in counseling and guidance.
  • Collegiate academic advising experience.

Physical Requirements: With or without assistance

  • Ability to bend, stoop, jump, kneel stand, walk and be on your feet for 3 hours a day to demonstrate sport.
  • Operate a motor vehicle and be able to drive to games and back.
  • Ability to carry equipment needed to and from practice and games.
  • Ability to ambulate and navigate stairs and ramps throughout the campus complex.
