Nature Of Work

The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is a multi-disciplinary diabetes center affiliated with the University of Colorado, School of Medicine. The person holding this position will develop and direct an independent, externally funded research program related to the development and/or investigation of the molecular and/or cellular mechanisms operative in human stem cell models related to understanding the etiology of Type 1 Diabetes or developing human stem cell derived therapies. This individual will be responsible for the daily management, supervision, training and evaluation of personnel (such as graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and professional research assistants) whose positions are funded by research grants on which s/he is the principal investigator.

Professional Field

Type 1 diabetes, human stem cell biology, human stem cell-derived beta cells, regenerative medicine, or a related field.

Supervision Received

The position will report directly to the Direct of the BDC Basic and Translational research division.

Supervision Provided

This position will supervise other employees. This individual will be responsible for the daily management, supervision, training, and evaluation of personnel (such as graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and professional research assistants) whose positions are funded by research grants on which s/he is the principal investigator. These employee(s) will report directly to the principal investigator.

Duties And Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and lead an independent externally funded research program
  • Develop novel approaches to using human stem cells to understand the etiology of T1D and/or to develop novel stem cell therapies for T1D
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the basic and translational research community to obtain external funding and publish high-impact manuscripts
  • Present research in all appropriate venues to increase the awareness of research being performed in the lab, and to facilitate collaborative interactions.
  • Participate in service activities within the department, the university and the broader scientific community that contribute to the accomplishment of department and university missions, and that promote the success and welfare of the broader scientific and medical community.
  • Mentor pre- and post-doctoral trainees

Working Conditions

This position is 100% FTE involving clinical care and pharmaceutical research.  Schedule primarily Monday – Friday, but occasional weekend or extended hours required for research studies.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established at:

Assistant Professor: $90,000 - $115,000  

Associate Professor: $110,000 - $135,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Assistant Professor:

  • PhD and/or MD or a comparable doctoral degree in biomedical sciences
  • At least 3 years of post-doctoral experience the fields of islet biology, stem cell biology, molecular biology, and diabetes
  • Accomplishments and publications in research areas spanning the boundary between the basic and translational research.

Associate Professor:

  • PhD and/or MD or a comparable doctoral degree biomedical sciences
  • At least 3 years of post-doctoral experience the fields of islet biology, stem cell biology, molecular biology, and diabetes
  • Accomplishments and publications in research areas spanning the boundary between the basic and translational research.
  • A funding and publication track record consistent with appointment at the level of Associate Professor in the University of Colorado School of Medicine

Preferred Qualifications (for all ranks):

  • Post-doctoral experience in the broad area of stem cell biology or regenerative medicine related to T1D
  • Strong motivation to collaborate with investigators in multiple different domains
  • Priority will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience investigating basic or translational human islet biology or research models of islet biology related to Type 1 Diabetes.
  • Experience in islet biology, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and/or a closely related field is essential.
