The Institute of Ecology and Evolution (IE2) facilitates research and graduate education in ecology and evolutionary biology. The Soil-Plant-Atmosphere Research Laboratory is an interdisciplinary research group that emphasizes collaborative research within and across the PNW and central/northern Brazil, as model systems to test scalable climate solutions. Our group includes scientists at a variety of levels from undergraduates to PhDs, and we seek Fellows who will facilitate mentoring opportunities with junior lab members as well as participate in day-to-day lab activities. We have a strong tradition of comparative socioecological and biogeochemical research and a robust network of partners already established in both regions.

The Soil-Plant-Atmosphere Research Laboratory is seeking two Postdoctoral Fellows to study the climate benefits of reforestation across a range of ecosystems. One position will work closely with The Nature Conservancy in Oregon and will focus on riparian reforestation in watersheds of the Pacific Northwest (PNW) of the USA, as a model temperate system. The other position will focus on watersheds in central/northern Brazil, as a model tropical system. Despite major reforestation efforts ongoing in both regions, we still lack data and a basic understanding of essential ecosystem processes to assess the risks and benefits of large-scale reforestation. To address this issue, the Postdoctoral Scholars will work in collaboration with an existing network of community partners to quantify the potential of near-term carbon storage (0-50+ years) using a combination of field data, geospatial statistics, and process-based modeling. As a team, we will focus on enhancing natural climate solutions that integrate social and ecological dynamics at local to regional scales. Our deliverables will inform climate change mitigation (e.g., ecosystem carbon sequestration) and adaptation (e.g., drought and fire risk management) efforts, including co-benefits of reforestation projects from the perspective of vulnerable industries and communities (e.g., floodwater attenuation, water quality regulation, habitat for endangered species, etc).

• Ph.D. in related field by January 2023.
• Experience in geostatistical analysis and/or spatial data synthesis.

• Ability to use a combination of field data, geospatial statistics, and process-based modeling.- Demonstrated ability to process, organize, and analyze data.
• Demonstrated ability to lead manuscript development for peer-review publication.
• Ability to work effectively in teams in the office and in the field.
• Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

• Experience developing or implementing socioecological or process-based models.
• Strong quantitative spatial analysis skills (e.g., GIS, Google Earth Engine).
• Experience working on interdisciplinary projects.
• Experience working on collaborative projects.
• Strong publication record.
