Postdoctoral Research Associate
Job Description
In Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), our
faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in
sophisticated manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and
the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their
expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Alan McGaughey Lab at
MechE. In this role, you will carry out advanced independent and/or advised research to
achieve the objectives of the research project. This position will require an in depth
knowledge of a specialized field, process, or subject area and may involve coordinating
and implementing complex research plans, the development of methods of research,
testing and data collection, analysis and evaluation, and writing reports which contain
descriptive, analytical and evaluative content. You will acquire the professional skills
needed to pursue a career path of your choosing. Your responsibilities will include
investigating thermal transport in crystals and alloys using modeling and experimental
techniques and such other tasks that are assigned to you.
Alan McGaughey leads the Nanoscale Transport Phenomena Laboratory, which seeks to
understand the transport of mass, momentum, and energy at the atomic level by
studying the behavior of phonons, photons, electrons, and fluid particles. Their research
is based in mechanical engineering and incorporates knowledge from physics, materials
science, and chemistry. They develop and apply molecular- and meso-scale simulation
techniques, and collaborate closely with experimental research groups.
Your core responsibilities will include:
Carrying out calculations of phonon properties of crystals and alloys using first principles calculations, lattice dynamics calculations, and the Boltzmann transport equation
Responsible for making measurements of thermal conductivity of thin films of crystals and alloys.
Other duties as assigned
Flexibility, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within the Mechanical Engineering department. Inclusion, collaboration and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.
You should demonstrate:
Strong analytical skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Problem-solving and reasoning skills
Qualifications:
Doctorate degree in Engineering, or science-related field
Experience in atomistic simulations and calculations (molecular dynamics calculations, lattice dynamics calculations, density functional theory calculations) for modeling thermal transport.
Or a combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
Requirements:
Successful background check
