Job Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Nevada, Reno is seeking applications for an NSHE Specialist 1. The position will be responsible for fiscal management of the department and will manage state, self-supporting, foundation, grant faculty start-up and indirect cost recovery accounts. The position will draft and develop annual budgets; research and evaluate needs; recommend budget adjustments; and collaboratively finalize budget requests with the Department Chair. This position will act as an office manager for the Department by overseeing daily operations and supervising 2 full-time classified staff and student office staff. The ideal candidate will plan subordinates’ short and long-term objectives, and ensure there is continuous office coverage, and organize and oversee confidentiality of department files.

Additionally, this position will oversee the preparation and processing of human capital management transactions for 40 permanent faculty, 2 classified staff, 30-35 graduate assistants, postdoctoral scholars, up to 20 teaching Letters of Appointments and 5-10 student employees. As well, this position will serve as search coordinator for faculty, postdoctoral scholars and classified staff. The incumbent is responsible for keeping all personnel issues confidential. The NSHE 1 Specialist will provide direct assistance to the Department Chair by acting as the primary liaison on the department’s fiscal matters. This position will work collaboratively with the Chair to provide guide the smooth operation of the Department; prepare agendas, minutes and meeting materials; and assist the Chair with special projects, such as assessment data for accreditation.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and one (1) year of relevant experience; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three (3) years of program support experience equivalent to an Administrative Assistant III in Nevada state service which included applying complex laws and regulations, composing written materials and maintaining records; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Schedule

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.

 

Compensation Grade

Grade 31 (Step 01 $20.97/hr – Step 05 $24.81/hr)

 

In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
