Department Description

The Department of Entomology, in collaboration with Cornell’s Active Learning Initiative, invites applicants for a full-time Teaching Postdoctoral Associate with interest in developing skills and experience in Biology Education Research and Evidence-Based Pedagogy in preparation for an academic career. Specifically, the teaching postdoctoral associate will play a key role in supporting the development and optimization of active learning for a large Cornell course, ENTOM2100/BSOC2101 ‘Plagues and People’ as well as supporting adoption of active learning in other departmental courses. The successful candidate will focus on enhancing student participation and group problem solving in these courses. Job Description

The Teaching Postdoctoral Associate will be appointed for a one-year period, not renewable. The successful candidate will collaborate with Entomology faculty towards the following goals: formulate learning goals, develop active learning-based modules that align with Plagues and People course learning goals and are transferable to other courses, provide feedback on course teaching practices, evaluate and assess learning gains, present/publish the results, and act as a consultant for other Faculty members in the department.

We expect that successful candidates will devote:

• 20% of their effort on advising and consulting with Entomology Faculty to adopt active learning in their classes.
• 60% of their effort to developing active learning material and activities pertaining to the goals and content of Plagues and People and participating in teaching that material in the classroom,.
• 20% effort to assessment of the implementation of active learning, presentation/publication.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Organismal Biology, Ecology/Environmental Sciences /Entomology, Biology Education, Public Health or a related field and have excellent organizational, interpersonal communication, team building and collaboration skills. Experience in developing active learning curricula and coaching educators is essential.

Terms of Appointment

This is a 1-year appointment with no possibility of extension. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The anticipated start date for the appointment is January 2023 (start date is negotiable).
