Job Summary

Drs. Bruce Cree and Stephen Hauser are seeking a bright and enthusiastic Bioinformatics Programmer to become an integral member of our multidisciplinary team. We conduct high-quality, cutting-edge research to better understand the causes and disease course of multiple sclerosis (MS) and other inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system. The goal is to develop new and better therapies in the treatment of these conditions.

The incumbent will support these efforts by providing the necessary knowledge and skills to develop, integrate and utilize computational tools and statistical methodologies to analyze and interpret large scale clinical, genomic, and other biological research datasets. In addition to having strong communication and organizational skills, this individual will lend expertise to investigators in developing technical approaches on the design of new experiments and can Implement end-user needs in database searching and integration. The Bioinformatics Programmer will use professional bioinformatics concepts and apply computational procedures to resolve a variety of analysis and research issues. Individual will work on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of data requires a review of a variety of factors and can develop additional analyses as needed to achieve research objectives. Individual will prepare written interpretation of results and evaluate, adapt, and develop new techniques as needed. 

The team is part of the Neuroimmunology and Glial Biology Division (NGBD) within the Department of Neurology and a member of the UCSF Weill Institute of Neuroscience. Our clinician scientists are internationally renowned and are dedicated to advancing science and providing compassionate exceptional care to our patients.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and minimum one year experience or equivalent experience / training.
  • Working knowledge of bioinformatics methods and data structures.
  • Working knowledge of applications programming
  • Working knowledge of databases.
  • Working project management skills.
  • Working knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.
  • Interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Self motivated, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of application and data security concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in bioinformatics or computer science
