Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate III will be involved in specialized clinical/translational science research and will report to the PI in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology. The PI utilizes a focus on computational genomics to understand the genetic vulnerabilities in gynecologic cancer that can be exploited for therapeutic targeting. The research is particularly focused on early detection of ovarian cancer, using novel approaches to better stratify ovarian cancers, and understanding the immune signaling between gynecologic cancer cells and their microenvironment. For this reason, the Staff Research Associate III will be tasked with the following duties to aid in her research: 

  • Computational research: Data analysis, visualization, manuscript writing, pipeline construction and execution, literature review, conference attendance. 
  • Research project management: IRB protocol creation and maintenance, database management, facilitating regulatory documentation for internal & external collaboration, collaborator interface. 

The PI is also the director of the UCSF Gynecologic Oncology Tissue Bank, which collects, stores and annotates clinical tissue specimens for use in impactful research of gynecologic cancers. This position will also serve as the prime administrator of the tissue bank. Responsibilities include but not limited to regular monitoring and reporting on tissue bank activities, database management, maintenance of the tissue bank IRB study protocol, collaborating with tissue bank collecting teams and distributing samples to research collaborators. 

The successful candidate should be detail oriented, capable of working collaboratively, able to work independently with limited supervision, possess strong critical thinking, problem solving, organizational and communication skills. Applicants should enjoy collaborative work and be very self-motivated. Work will be done at multiple UCSF sites.


Department Description

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences (Ob/Gyn & RS) is a major academic Department in the School of Medicine, engaged in clinical, research, and training activities at the Parnassus, Mt. Zion and SFGH campuses, as well as satellite locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, with an annual operating budget of over $139 million. The Department has repeatedly ranked No. 1 in research funding from the National Institutes of Health. The Department has 86 full-time faculty, 136 other academic appointees, 18 postdoctoral fellows, 20 clinical fellows, 32 residents, 113 voluntary clinical faculty, and 310 staff. Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in biological science, computational biology, computer science, or related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 2-3 year experience working in computational biology, biology research.
  • Strong programming skills (python, R)
  • Experience with statistics/biostatistics
  • Experience in data analysis pipeline construction
  • Strong proficiency in genetic data analysis and visualization
  • Strong database skills – RedCap or similar
  • Strong base of knowledge in cellular and molecular biology
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Strong and effective communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player with individuals at all level
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively with interruptions, deadlines and pressure
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and is flexible to change
  • Ability to problem-solve and follow-through with minimal supervision 

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in computer science, computational biology, biological sciences or related science
  • Strong proficiency in DNA analysis pipeline construction
  • Experience with AWS cloud computing
  • Experience with of electronic health records
  • Experience in cancer biology
  • Wet lab work experience
  • Experience with single cell sequencing
  • Experience working with circulating free DNA and/or liquid biopsies
  • UCSF work experience in academic, research, teaching and clinical departments
  • Experience working with the UCSF Committee on Human Research
