Job Summary

Drs. Bruce Cree and Stephen Hauser seek a bright and enthusiastic Bioinformatics Programmer to become an integral member of their multidisciplinary team. The group conducts high-quality, cutting-edge research to better understand the causes and disease course of multiple sclerosis (MS) and other inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system. The goal is to develop new and better therapies in the treatment of these conditions.

The incumbent, under direct supervision, will support these efforts by performing statistical and bioinformatic analyses on large scale clinical and genomic datasets. In addition to having strong communication and organizational skills, they must understand and be able to implement R and other standard statistical software. Incumbent will prepare written interpretation of results and evaluate, adapt, and develop new techniques as needed. 

The team is part of the Neuroimmunology and Glial Biology Division (NGBD) within the Department of Neurology and a member of the UCSF Weill Institute of Neuroscience. Our clinician scientists are internationally renowned and are dedicated to advancing science and providing compassionate exceptional care to our patients.

Required Qualifications

  • BA in Statistics or equivalent combination of education/experience
  • Basic knowledge of bioinformatics methods and data structures.
  • Basic knowledge and working experience with R
  • Basic knowledge of applications programming and working experience with other statistical software (genetic)
  • Basic project management skills – skilled in data handling and management of large datasets
  • Interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Self motivated, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA/BS in biological sciences
  • Basic knowledge of molecular and genetic biology and applicable filed of research
  • Basic knowledge/experience with complex human disorders
