Agricultural Assistant II

Job Description:

Establish and maintain research and demonstration groves and orchards at different locations statewide.  Tasks will include planting, application of experimental treatments (nutrition, plant growth regulators) per research guidelines, irrigation systems, pruning, fruit thinning, and harvesting.  

Independently and in collaboration with supervisor, design and execute citrus and other specialty crop production experiments in the field, greenhouse and laboratory. Experiments will require data collection including nutrient/carbohydrate analyses, phytochemical analysis, plant growth measurements, plant propagation, stem water potential and care and maintenance of ized plants.  

Sample processing for chemical and molecular analysis. Example: DNA/RNA extraction, carbohydrate quantification, fruit quality assessment, gene expression etc. 

Data entry, statistical analysis and preparation of written reports.  

Assist graduate students, postdoctoral associates, visiting scientists in field and supervise OPS technical support in lab and field.  

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. 


Expected Salary:

$15.00 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma or equivalent and two years of relevant experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience with DNA/RNA extraction and related lab methods is highly desired.

Microsoft office software skill.

Ability to independently conduct horticultural research using scientific methodology.

Ability to plan, organize, supervise, communicate and coordinate work assignments.

Understanding of statistical methods, and the ability to apply them and use computers to compile and analyze data.

Skill in the use of scientific laboratory and field equipment.

Candidate has demonstrated ability to troubleshoot research methods as well as contributed in developing new methodology.


Special Instructions to Applicants:

Must possess a valid Florida Drivers’ License or have the ability to obtain one within 60 days from date of hire.

This position involves working outside in commercial and research orchards all year. Therefore, candidate will have to take heat stress training and comply with policies.
