Position Overview

The Institute for Policy & Social Research (IPSR) is a faculty-driven research center supporting social scientists who focus on social problems and policy-relevant research questions. The Institute for Policy & Social Research at the University of Kansas invites candidates to apply for a Postdoctoral Researcher position for a 2–3-year appointment. The position is expected to begin as early as January 1, 2023.  IPSR is seeking candidates who aspire to become academic researchers in the areas of applied microeconomics, public policy, or demography.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will work closely with Dr. Donna K. Ginther on multiple projects related to gender and race/ethnicity differences in academic research productivity and career outcomes.  The position offers opportunities for co-authorship on publications. The candidate will also have opportunities to collaborate with IPSR-affiliated faculty. This work is supported by funding from the National Science Foundation.


Job Description

70% - Research
Conduct research in the area of race/ethnicity differences in academic research productivity and career outcomes. Prepare and present updates on ongoing research, provide written reports on progress, participate in group meetings.

20% - Project Management
The Postdoctoral Researcher works directly with the PI to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the research projects.  This includes overseeing research assignments, monitoring progress toward research goals, and providing technical assistance to project staff. 

10% - Other Duties
The Postdoctoral Researcher will complete other duties assigned as needed.


Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through:  (1) descriptions of research agenda in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity included in CV, (3) a writing sample, and (4) information provided from three professional references.

1.  A PhD in economics, public policy, demography, sociology or in a related field.
2.  Experience with programming in STATA, SAS or R and handling large-scale population surveys and administrative records as evidenced by application materials.
3.  Strong writing and communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
4.  A proven ability to work independently as evidenced by application materials.

NOTE: To be appointed as a Postdoctoral Researcher, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand by the start date. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Research related the science of science and innovation policy.
  • Strong micro econometric skills as demonstrated by research using these methods.

    Advertised Salary Range

    $53,760-$70,000 – Commensurate with experience
