School of Arts & Creative Industries (SACI)

The School of Arts & Creative Industries is a forward looking, dynamic school preparing its students for employability and responsible citizenship fit for the demands of the 21st Century.

Situated in the heart of Scotland’s festival city, Edinburgh, SACI is made up of three subject areas – Screen & Performing Arts; Media and Humanities; and Art, Design and Photography. The School is home to just over 1800 students and about 96 permanent staff plus a range of industry experts and specialist staff employed on a more casual basis.

Screen & Performing Arts

Screen and Performing Arts is made up of a diverse, vibrant group of subject areas that cover film and television, music, acting and performing arts. Our staff are deeply committed to helping our students become young professionals – mature in their thinking, fresh in their approach to their subject areas and people who would like to use their creativity to bring about societal changes. Correspondingly, our staff are deeply committed individuals, very collaborative with great links into industry. Our students are award winning, with award winning films like Limbo being produced and directed by our alumni. Also, being in Edinburgh affords us the exciting opportunity to engage with all the top festivals on offer – Edinburgh International Film festival, Edinburgh International TV Festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival.

We are currently looking to expand our team with two film practice posts, a lecturer and associate professor (grade 7) in film & television production.

The Role

BA (Hons) Film and BA (Hons) Television at Edinburgh Napier University are practice based programmes and we are listed as a top UK University for Film Production & Photography (2nd of 68 - The Guardian Guide 2022).

We are based in the School of Arts & Creative Industries (SACI), located in the beautiful and historic heart of Morningside, Edinburgh. The School hosts a range of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes and plays an active part in the creative industries in Scotland and beyond.

This role is predominantly concerned with the teaching of professional drama practices and we are specifically looking for applicants with experience in either of the following:

  • Drama producing for film / high-end television
  • Studio production, including multi-camera experience in directing or producing.

If successful, you will contribute mainly to the delivery of our BA (Hons) Film and Television programmes, and you may also be asked to contribute to our MA programmes.

You will be working alongside a specialist and highly dedicated team of practitioners within the film and television production curriculum. You will be expected to contribute to the development, design, leadership and delivery of a student-centred learning experience that is underpinned by professional practice and academic scholarship, within your assigned areas of responsibility. You will also act as Personal Tutor for students.

As a lecturer in film production, you will:

  • Become a member of our teaching team and contribute to the BA and MA programmes, including programme leadership responsibilities.
  • Be given research time allocation in your workload.
  • Join one of our new research centres in SACI and collaborate in research activity.
  • Be given training and development opportunities through our Human Resources (HR) and Research, Innovation and Enterprise Office (RIE).

Applicants must demonstrate:

(Essential)

  • Postgraduate or Undergraduate degree with demonstrable subject expertise in the area along with relevant practice experience in the field.
  • Evidence of relevant teaching experience.
  • A commitment to sustained continuous professional and academic development, while maintaining and establishing links with media industries in order to strengthen teaching programmes, research and associated activities.
  • Experience in leading, developing, designing and delivering teaching and student-centred learning, with a knowledge of industry standards and regulations.
  • Collegiate in approach: We are looking for a colleague with the enthusiasm required to contribute to and lead on the teaching of drama production, in order to successfully develop the next generation of film makers. You must be equally comfortable working independently as you are collaborating as part of our successful film education team.

  • membership within 18 months of appointment.

Gross Base Salary:

£42,155 - 51,805 per annum (Grade 6) Pro rata
