Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday – Friday, with up to 2 evenings a week required, flexible hybrid schedule options available

Compensation: $23.00 - $25.00/hour

Who we are: *Since 1971, Hopelink has served homeless and low-income families, children, seniors and people with disabilities in the north and east King County, WA. With service centers in Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, Shoreline and Sno-Valley (Carnation), we are the largest nonprofit organization in the area. Hopelink programs and services focus on five key areas: food, financial assistance, housing & family development, adult education & employment and transportation/mobility. Programs are aimed at helping people achieve stability, and helping them gain the skills and knowledge they need to exit poverty for good.


Summary of the role: * The English Language Instructor teaches in the English for Work program, a one-quarter program offered year-round which is designed to support adult immigrants and refugees with developing English language skills while preparing for employment.
English for Work classes are currently offered on Zoom and are held two days per week during morning and evening hours. This position will teach two English for Work classes, one of which will be an evening class. In 2023, this position is expected to be on-site to teach at least one class in person and to support students and meet with team members and volunteers as needed. Work from home available when on-site activities are not required.
This position also performs duties not directly related to teaching to support the overall Adult Education program, such as conducting outreach, assisting students with completing program intake forms, delivering program orientations, facilitating workshops, conducting CASAS testing, entering attendance and student information in a database, and coordinating volunteers who support students.
Members of BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) communities, or people who have personal experience in historically marginalized and excluded communities are especially encouraged to apply.


What you’ll be doing:

  • Teaches English for Work classes.
  • Utilizes provided curriculum and develops and selects course materials for both online and hybrid instruction modes with adaptations for a variety of levels and learning needs.
  • Collaborates with Adult Education team to continuously improve programs.
  • Aligns instruction to the College and Career Readiness Standards.
  • Provides timely feedback on students’ assignments in the Canvas Learning Management System.
  • Delivers new student orientations and completes intake paperwork with students.
  • Conducts CASAS pre-testing and post-testing remotely and in person.
  • Coordinates volunteers who serve as teachers and class assistants and supports volunteers in applying principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and a trauma-informed approach.
  • Collaborates with volunteer advisers to support students in reaching their education and employment goals and with other departments within Hopelink to connect students to support services such as financial coaching, employment, case management, food, and energy assistance.
  • Collects and enters student data into database and reviews data for accuracy; tracks client progression and program outcomes and uses data for program improvement.
  • Stays informed on current employment trends, labor market data, job training and apprenticeship programs, and college programs and disseminates information to colleagues, volunteers, and students.
  • Facilitates workshops for Adult Education students to supplement their learning and support progress toward reaching their goals.
  • Promotes Adult Education programs within Hopelink and in the community by leading and attending outreach events, distributing flyers, and building and maintaining relationships with staff and community partners.
  • Responds to inquiries about Adult Education programs via phone and email.
  • Checks out materials from the Hopelink library such as Chromebooks/laptops to students and ensures that students know how to use the materials and tech equipment.

Required Qualifications:

  • TESOL Certification or experience in a closely related field with coursework in language teaching methodology and language acquisition theories
  • 2+ years’ experience teaching adults
  • Committed to racial equity and to applying principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of work
  • Committed to using a trauma-informed approach in providing service to students and collaborating with colleagues
  • Experience working with low-income populations and immigrants and refugees
  • Excellent cross-cultural communication skills and commitment to practicing cultural humility
  • Excellent English communication skills both written and oral
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace; comfort with using Chromebooks, learning new technology, troubleshooting tech issues, and using technology tools to enhance instruction
  • Ability to accurately enter and manage client data in a database
  • Able to work at least two evenings per week


Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Linguistics, Sociology, or related field of study
  • Experience teaching work-contextualized classes or providing employment readiness training
  • Bilingual or multilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience developing/modifying curriculum both collaboratively and independently
  • CASAS assessment experience or equivalent
  • Experience using the Canvas learning management system

Licenses, Certificates, & Other Requirements:

  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Reliable personal transportation.
  • Proof of current personal automobile liability insurance.
  • Must pass criminal background check.
