The Opportunity

The University of Central Florida (UCF) School of Performing Arts is seeking a 9-month assistant professor (tenure-earning) or associate professor (with tenure) in music and an internal university title of program director of orchestral activities, to lead UCF’s School of Performing Arts orchestral studies program. Instructional duties to include directing the university orchestras, teach string music education courses and other courses according to the ability of the applicant and needs of the department. Ongoing research and university service is an expectation of all tenured and tenure-earning faculty. Collaboration with faculty, staff, and students in both Music and Theater Departments in addition to student recruitment is expected. The anticipated start date is August 2023.

Minimum Qualifications      

For assistant professor : An earned master's degree in music from an accredited institution, at least five years of professional experience leading an orchestra and teaching string music education. Evidence of excellent musicianship, exhibiting quality and significant professional activity that demonstrates a clear capacity for academic advancement commensurate with a tenure-earning position. The ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, university administration, and the community.

For associate professor : An earned master's degree in music from an accredited institution, at least five years of professional experience leading an orchestra and teaching string music education. Evidence of superb musicianship, exhibiting quality and significant professional activity that demonstrates a clear capacity commensurate with a tenured position. The ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, university administration, and the community. In addition, evidence of successful national experience in orchestral conducting and the following at the collegiate level: directing an orchestral program; demonstrated extensive leadership and administrative acumen; successful string recruiting. Currently holding rank of associate professor or higher at an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications      

For either rank: A string performer with an earned doctoral degree in music from an accredited institution; evidence of successful national experience in orchestral conducting and the following at the collegiate level: directing an orchestral program and at least five years teaching string music education; successful string recruiting. Strong leadership and administrative acumen, evidence of successful recruitment of students and the ability to proactively engage with public school music educators and a demonstrated history of engagement with public school strings programs. Experience working with diverse orchestral genres including opera and musical theatre.
