Full Job Description

The Director for the IDEAL center partners closely with SMM’s HR leadership to advance and develop strategies and infrastructure for systems change and equity work internally at SMM and provides strategic leadership for the IDEAL center department which leads external client facing work to advance equity and systems change in other workplace settings. This role plays a significant role in the future success of the organization.


The Director for IDEAL center is charged with

(1) ensuring a compelling and principled strategic vision to support diversity, promote inclusion, increase access, and achieve equity in bringing about meaningful and lasting institutional change at SMM while also influencing this work with external clients and vice versa;

(2) growing relationships with potential and existing external clients and institutional program participants in a variety of sectors and at senior levels of leadership;

(3) maintaining and growing business sustainability and management for the department;

(4) conducting all grant-funded efforts in compliance with funders policies and guidelines;

(5) providing general oversight of IDEAL programs, services, curricula, and staff;

(6) collaborating with other Science Museum departments within and beyond the SEED division, serving as a leader for the professional development to ensureSTEM equity learning experiences are inclusive and engaging for a broad range of learners at various stages of awareness of equity practice and theory. A high level of intellectual acuity, creative thinking, systems-thinking, and professionalism are required. Organizational acumen and detail orientation is essential as well as the ability to manage multiple deadlines; to be proactive, productive, and efficient, to work with little to no supervision while handling shifting priorities, and to make high level decisions in a variety of contexts and under pressure.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
1. Strategic Vision: Ensure a compelling and principled strategic vision to support diversity, promote inclusion, increase access, and achieve equity in bringing about meaningful and lasting institutional change at SMM and other institutions.

2. External Relationships: Develop, maintain, and grow external relationships with clients and institutional program participants in a variety of sectors and at senior levels of leadership.

  • Lead the alignment of capacity building and program strategy development to sustain a reputation of excellence while continuing to expand IDEAL’s potential clientele base.
  • Expand and elevate the number and profile of the IDEAL client base including multi-year, six-figure contracts and repeat business in a variety of sectors (K-12 education, higher education, informal education, non-profits, government agencies and/or corporate entities) and with a variety of constituents (including senior leadership teams, administrators, faculty and staff, trustees, STEM professionals, and informal STEM center professionals).
  • Oversee the recruitment and selection of organizations in a variety of sectors and with a variety of constituents for IDEAL programs that are funded privately and/or publicly.

3. Museum Leadership: Align plans, resources and efforts to support, amplify, and advance Science Equity and Education Division’s (SEED’s) and SMM’s strategic goals, mission and values related to DEI.

  • Partner closely with SMM’s HR Director to strategically advance SMM’s internal transformation in alignment with Diversity Equity and Inclusion goals and our 2030 plan.
  • Build upon SMM’s ongoing efforts to foster a more inclusive, diverse, equitable and accessible workplace that attracts, grows and retains teams and people with diverse backgrounds.
  • Build collaborative relationships with senior leadership and individual contributors to pursue efforts to support SMM’s One Museum culture by participating and collaborating in museum-wide committees and planning teams to further the organization’s mission, vision and values. Identify opportunities to integrate inclusion, diversity, equity and access (IDEA) principles and practices throughout the museum.
  • Work closely with the IDEAL team to track and manage program/project work to best align and maximize use of human and physical resources to meet department, division and museum goals.
  • Lead and/or inform SMM strategic planning, new project/program origination, and cross-cutting initiatives including the expansion and centering of equity work throughout the museum.
  • As an IDEA subject matter expert, contribute to problem-solving complex issues related to IDEA.

4. Business Performance: Maintain and grow business sustainability and management.

  • Direct development of sustainable department budgets. Ensure that financial performance of programs and projects are tracked and managed.
  • Creatively leverage resources to evolve and grow capacity and reach of the IDEAL Center (i.e., develop BIPOC teacher pathways, expand train the trainer models, create processes that connect part-time center staff to SMM job openings, etc.)
  • Develop and refine contract fee structures and processes; oversee contract development, execution, and monitoring systems.
  • Oversee the implementation of information and project management systems to seek improved efficiency, build audience, and optimize program impact. e. Contribute to SMM budget/financial work groups and systems implementation.

5. Departmental Leadership: Provide strategic direction, leadership, and guidance to all department staff.

  • Lead IDEAL Center strategic and operational planning; direct staff in the development, organization and implementation of all departmental plans, procedures and programming initiatives.
  • Coach, manage, supervise, and develop direct reports to achieve a high level of individual and team performance by providing challenging, engaging, and meaningful assignments; monitoring progress; and providing timely feedback.
  • Lead grant and development proposals and serve as Principal Investigator, Project Director, or Cost Center Manager for major IDEAL projects and grants.
  • Implement practices and procedures to attract, support, and motivate talented staff by creating a growth mindset culture that promotes learning, collaboration and innovation.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Education: College undergraduate degree or equivalent; graduate degree or equivalent preferred

2. Experience: 10+ years of experience providing strategic direction and planning for multi-audience programs and projects at local, state, and national levels. Demonstrated experience directing large staff groups (20 – 100) and supporting staff to research, develop and deliver programs for a wide range of audiences and program models. Ability to work effectively in a non-profit organization and culture. Demonstrated knowledge of research and implementation of STEM equity and inclusion practices. Demonstrated knowledge for design and delivery of professional development programs for adult learners. Knowledge of Equity Curricula and STEM trends, practices and standards for local, state, and national initiatives. Experience working with a variety of identity/cultural groups on creating equitable and inclusive environments. Demonstrated ability to read, understand, interpret, and apply ideas from complex academic texts.

3. Work Environment: Requires ability to work year-round with a semi-flexible schedule. Nation-wide multi night travel; extended hours during periods of intense activity.
The salary range for this position is $102-110K (USD) depending on qualifications and experience.
