We are seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to work on an NSF-funded study aiming to incorporate community values and equity considerations into policies incentivizing building retrofits to reduce seismic risk (https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2228559 ). Currently, building codes related to seismic hazard focus on preventing loss of life in the event of a design-level earthquake, without much regard for a structure’s function or other consequences, such as the duration of a repair period when it cannot be occupied or fulfill its function. Our project is motivated by the risks posed by non-ductile reinforced concrete buildings (NDRCBs) in Los Angeles that were constructed before modern seismic codes. The objective is to identify feasible policy designs that will motivate and incentivize communities to mitigate seismic risks, using a combination of social sciences and engineering techniques and experiments.

The postdoc will be co-supervised by Dr. David Johnson (Industrial Engineering & Political Science, Purdue University) and Dr. Holly Wang (Agricultural Economics, Purdue University). Primary responsibilities include (i) the design and execution of discrete choice experiments and survey instruments to elicit varied stakeholders’ willingness to pay for risk reduction to different types of buildings (e.g., residential, commercial, critical infrastructure); and (ii) organizing workshops and other engagement with local stakeholders in Los Angeles impacted by NDRCBs.

Applicants should have a PhD in economics, policy analysis, decision sciences or a related field. 

A successful applicant should have experience with discrete choice experiments or related revealed preference methods; prior experience with community outreach or other survey design methodologies are advantageous but not required. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and self-motivation are expected.
