The Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department is one of the oldest Chemistry departments in the nation with a proud history of discovery, innovation and scholarship. Under general supervision of the Dept. Manager, provide IT support for faculty, staff, and students in administrative, instructional and research areas of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and administrative and instructional areas of Physics. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Analyze, make recommendations, and resolve problems in a timely, friendly, and responsive manner.  This requires background research to identify the root cause of the issue and then developing and implementing innovative solutions that will meet the work needs of the customer.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve technical support issues from department staff and research groups concerning various database, office-suite, scheduling, communication, access device, group-ware, middle-ware systems and their components, including hardware, software, and network.
  • Maintain and upgrade computers, including diagnosing hardware/software problems and performing installations and repairs. 
  • Support and train users in various software programs, including MS Office and FileMaker. 
  • Provide support to prevent, detect, and eradicate computer malware. 
  • Perform activities to support the installation, daily operation, backup, and security of applications and file servers as needed.
  • Coordinate, schedule releases of operating systems, security patches, back-ups and ensure minimal impact on the end user.
  • Provide administrative support for networking protocols, including preparing written documentation.
  • Document, test and modify computer configurations and programs across a multi-operating system platform including Windows, Linux, and Macintosh operating systems

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree; more than 1 but less than 2 years’ IT experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with computer hardware and software including Mac OS, Windows, and Linux. Experience configuring Internet software (email, browsers, etc.). Ability to diagnose/troubleshoot user problems and affect their resolution. Ability to work well independently in a fast-paced environment while managing several tasks simultaneously. Ability to maintain security of confidential and sensitive information. Effective written and verbal communication skills are needed. Experience that demonstrates sound judgment, creativity, and problem-solving skills.  Excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure. Must be flexible and receptive to new ideas and approaches. 

Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with the general computing/networking environment at Cornell University. Familiarity with various networking protocols such as TCP/IP and Ethernet.
