Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University currently has 11 faculty supporting MS and doctoral programs. State-of-the-art facilities support research across pharmacology and toxicology domains, with strengths in cardiovascular, neuro-, and cancer pharmacology and environmental, immuno-, and neurotoxicology. Faculty have multiple collaborations with scientists across the university and with academic, government, and industrial scientists outside the university. The Department has a strong commitment to inter-disciplinary research and has maintained a strong record of extramural funding from myriad sources. The department maintains a doctoral graduate program offering a Ph.D. concentration in Pharmacology and Toxicology as part of a Biomedical Sciences umbrella program. This flexible, research-based program is designed to develop the interests, capabilities, and expertise of tomorrow’s basic medical scientists. The School of Medicine also sponsors an MS program that is a significant source of students who complete thesis research with our faculty. The department values diverse experiences and perspectives. Job Duties
The Research Instructor/Research Assistant Professor will be responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research efforts in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, writing experimental protocols, organizing and implementing experiments, data collection and experimental procedures, recording and managing data, implementing quality control practices, analyzing data with various statistical techniques, and preparing data for dissemination at local/regional/national/international scientific meetings, submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed scientific journals for publication, and submitting research proposals to external funding bodies to support his/her independent research program and salary.
The Research Instructor also will supervise undergraduate and graduate research students, comply with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biological and chemical safety, responsible conduct of research, and the IACUC, and contribute to the teaching mission of the department as consistent with his/her area of expertise.
Additional expectations:
The Research Instructor/Research Assistant Professor is expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety and responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.
Approximately 20% of the Research Instructor’s/Research Assistant Professor’s time will be devoted to report writing, including scientific manuscripts, associated with the developed experimental protocols.
Approximately 60% of the Research Instructor’s/Research Assistant Professor’s time will be devoted to conducting the studies associated with the developed experimental protocols.
Approximately 20% of the Research Instructor’s/Research Assistant Professor’s time will be devoted to literature review and hypothesis development for the submission of extramural research award proposals.
Minimum Education/Experience
PhD in Pharmacology/toxicology or a highly related field
Postdoctoral training in Pharmacology/toxicology or a highly related field
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Established research experience in molecular pharmacology or toxicology, signal transduction, drug discovery, in vivo pharmacology and cell culture.
