The Office for Research’s core mission is to advance Rutgers’s preeminence in research. The Office for Research (OFR or Research) provides essential services university-wide that support faculty research and scholarship. The OFR teams support identifying sponsored award funding opportunities, submission of grant proposals, post-award financial management, negotiation of contracts, research regulatory affairs, intellectual property and commercialization activities, core services, and animal care provided by the Comparative Medicine Resources organization.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Researcher III – Gnotobiotic for the Office for Research. As part of the Office for Research, the Laboratory Researcher III independently provides diversified care, feeding, transportation, breeding, maintaining colony health status and genotyping for all animals used in the gnotobiotic core facility.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Coordinates and assists in the general maintenance of the Gnotobiotic core facility, particularly in maintenance of germ-free IVC cages and other areas as assigned.
  • Ensures the humane care and treatment of the animals.
  • Participates in leading, directing and training Laboratory Animal Care Technicians and others.
  • Responsible for daily maintenance of the animal colony rooms to be in compliance with animal welfare regulations, university and CMR policies. Duties include performance of gnotobiotic animal husbandry and colony monitoring procedures (surveillance, microbiological testing, genotyping) with special attention to the needs of germ-free species, observing and reporting signs of illness, injury or distress in animals.
  • Interacts with their supervisor and facility manager regarding needs of individual research projects and PI’s and will become familiar with all project protocols as it relates to daily husbandry needs of the colony rooms they maintain; ensures areas of noncompliance with regulations are reported; daily animal census is recorded and performs euthanasia when instructed.
  • Participates in research projects under the supervision of the PI’s as approved by CMR management.
  • May guide and instruct Lab Animal Care Technicians and others.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility . Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine . Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Bachelors of Science and or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
  • Minimum of two years research related animal handling experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid NJ state driver’s license required to operate university owned vehicles.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be able to read, write, follow instructions precisely and communicate effectively in the English language.
  • Must be detail oriented, organized and meticulous.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding gnotobiotics, genetics, and breeding of mice is desirable but not required.
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician certification or AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist preferred, with group-leading experience for the performance of the job.
  • Gnotobiotic experience is not required, however someone knowledgeable in gnotobiotic technology is preferred.
Equipment Utilized
  • IVC Racks, Flexible-film isolators, Cage washing equipment, Autoclaves, Floor scrubbers, Chemical mixing stations, Dry heat oven.
  • Various computer programs.
  • Using aseptic technique to perform microbiological testing and when handling germ-free animals.
  • May need to drive University vehicle.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • On prolonged daily basis must be able to perform the physical demands of the job of being able to lift 50 pounds, push and pull heavy loads of equipment, bend, stoop and reach, and work in cage wash and animal room conditions while wearing safety apparel and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Can be standing, bending, stooping, or reaching for long periods of time.
  • Potential exposure to animal dander, fluids and soiled waste as well as cleaning chemicals. The wearing of PPE could increase body temperature.
Special Conditions
  • Will be required to participate in the Occupational Health Program for animal workers.
  • Regular workweek may be other than Monday through Friday. Will include weekends and/or holidays as needed.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Clean driving record.
