Job Description Summary
The Department of Horticulture at Auburn University is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Professor – Specialty Crop Post-Harvest Physiologist. This position will be a nine-month, tenure-track faculty position with a 75% research and 25% teaching appointment. The projected start date is August 16, 2023.
Responsibilities: Conduct applied and basic research to enhance our fundamental understanding of both pre-harvest and post-harvest factors that influence fresh produce nutrition, quality, consumer sensory appeal and product longevity (shelf-life). Research to enhance production of high-quality horticultural commodities while minimizing postharvest losses and development of best management practices for producers and handlers/retailers. Tremendous collaboration with fruit and vegetable specialists/faculty and new small fruit breeder anticipated. Collaboration also possible with members of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System Commercial Horticulture Team. The selected individual will be expected to publish regularly in peer-reviewed journals appropriate to the discipline of their research and to compete successfully for external funding to support their research program. The selected individual will be expected to mentor undergraduates in short-term research projects and to train future scientists by directly advising M.S. and Ph.D. students. The selected individual will have responsibility in both undergraduate and graduate instruction. Exact course offerings will be negotiable and based on the selected individual’s expertise. Departmental, college, and university service is expected.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in Horticulture, or a closely related plant science discipline with a strong emphasis in post-harvest physiology and management of specialty crops at the time employment begins. Postdoctoral experience required. Research experience in a post-harvest physiology laboratory examining nutritional value, quality, sensory attributes, and longevity of fresh market fruit and vegetable specialty crops. Evidence of peer-reviewed scholarship in reputable horticultural or plant science journals and successful extramural competitive grant funding. Experience teaching (either as TA or instructor of record) for undergraduate and/or graduate courses. The selected individual must possess excellent written and interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact with diverse audiences. The selected candidate must meet eligibility requirements to be gainfully employed in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and to continue working legally for the term of employment.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in mentoring graduate students as major advisor; Experience in leading undergraduate student research projects; Experience in developing and delivering educational programming for commercial producers. Experience in organic production systems. Experience collaborating with a specialty crop fruit or vegetable breeder.
