Job Summary

Reporting to the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences’ (SEAS) Assistant Dean for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DIB), the Assistant Director for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging is responsible for equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging programming that recruits, retains, and develops a more diverse and inclusive SEAS community. This position works closely with various SEAS offices, including Academic Programs, Faculty Affairs, Human Resources, and Communications, among others, to support recruitment and retention efforts, develop, implement, and assess programming and events for the entire SEAS community that advances the SEAS DIB Strategic Plan. This position works collaboratively with the Assistant Dean for and Senior Leaders to shape the culture around DIB at SEAS.


Position Description

  • In collaboration with the Assistant Dean, this position contributes to the strategic direction of DIB efforts at SEAS
  • Designs and delivers a comprehensive calendar of programs focused on diversity, inclusion, and belonging for all members of the SEAS community.
  • Assesses, analyzes, and reports on the efficacy of programs in meeting DIB goals
  • Manages the DIB Fellows program, including mentoring Fellows and supervising program initiatives.
  • Assists in the ongoing work of the SEAS Committee on DIB and its Strategic Plan.
  • Builds SEAS community-wide understanding of DIB issues.
  • Leads SEAS DIB special projects, including long-range planning, scheduling, and coordination with various offices
  • Enhances efforts to recruit and engage diverse student cohorts, including attending and organizing conferences, targeted outreach, and area-specific information sessions.
  • May develop and implement training programs that promote diversity, inclusion, and belonging within the SEAS community for faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students
  • Manages SEAS DIB procurement and reconciliation.
  • Manages the SEAS DIB website.

Basic Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 7 years of related experience. Demonstrated experience in the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging space. Advanced education may count toward years of experience.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

Master’s degree in a related field and experience in a university environment or other large, complex organizational setting is preferred. A track record of success moving diversity and inclusion goals forward in an organization is desired. Well-prepared candidates will have a demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively on multiple tasks, proven experience in supervising student staff, and event and project management. Excellent oral and written presentation skills, including comfort as a public speaker. Knowledge of assessment and evaluation methods. Commitment to staying current on issues of diversity and inclusion. Willingness to work occasional nights and weekends.

  • This position will be based in Allston, MA and will require an on-campus presence. The department is currently operating with a hybrid workplace model.  All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT).
