    Position description

    Associate Specialist – Tang Lab

    The Tang Lab in the Diabetes Center at University of California, San Francisco is looking to recruit an Associate Specialist.

    Primary Responsibilities:
    • Incumbent will be expected assist postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on experiments that include cell culture, molecular cloning, flow cytometry analysis, FACS purification of mouse and human Treg cells, performing in vitro cell functional assays, performing experiments using laboratory animals that include cell injections, health monitoring, blood glucose measurements, and bioluminescence imaging, tissue dissections and cell isolations.
    • The incumbent is expected lead a research project under the direct supervision of the PI. This includes designing experiments, performing experiments and data analysis, generate data summary and present at regularly held one-on-one and group meetings.

    Required Qualifications:
    • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must have (or in process of obtaining) a master’s degree or have a baccalaureate degree plus a minimum of six years, post-baccalaureate, of experience in the relevant specialization.
    • Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire.
    • Knowledge of and experience with mouse husbandry and handling.
    • Demonstrable skills in long-term mammalian cell culture.
    • Comfortable working with laboratory instruments and computers; Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Comfortable working with primary human blood samples.
    • The ability to work under minimal supervision after the initial training period is key for this position.
    • Strong organization skills in time management and maintenance of accurate notebooks and computer files.
    • Team player with good communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Willingness to learn and highly motivated to succeed.
    • Willingness to be flexible with work hours to accommodate experimental schedules.
    • Applicant’s materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experiences with flow cytometry.
    • General knowledge of the immune system.
    • Basic molecular biology techniques, such as PCR, DNA sequence analysis and/or cloning are desirable.

    Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.
