The Cogut Institute for the Humanities at Brown University advances collaborative research and curricular innovation in the humanities and across the University. Our annual fellowship program brings together faculty, postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate fellows to explore work-in-progress in a dynamic workshop setting. We offer the Doctoral Certificate in Collaborative Humanities, featuring team-taught seminars on transdisciplinary topics, and provide cutting-edge research seminars for undergraduates. A rich array of programming — conferences, lecture series, and colloquia — enhances the institute’s core research and curricular mission, creating a lively space of inquiry and dialogue that draws in faculty, students, and members of the larger Providence community.

The Institute Manager serves as the operations leader for the Institute, overseeing and in many cases administering all activities related to finance, budget, facilities, human resources, academic programs, and other administration. Reporting to the Institute Director, this position is responsible for the logistical and operational support of collaborative research, fellowship programs and curricular innovation across the humanities and plays a key role in creating spaces of community and welcoming fellows, visitors, and guests at the institute.

This position manages a complex budget including supporting the development of grant proposals. The institute manager oversees the logistical planning and execution of a broad range of events, from small reading groups to high-profile lectures to multi-day conferences, in virtual, in-person, and hybrid modes.

The manager will supervise a small team.

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Financial management experience required.

  • Administrative support in an academic setting is preferred.

  • Strong financial management and analytical skills.

  • Superior organizational and multitasking skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Must have prior supervisory experience.

  • Proven ability to evaluate and make sound recommendations on complex issues.

  • Familiarity with University operations, including Facilities and project management.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in the use of computers and computer applications (Microsoft Office/Google Suites, Excel) and demonstrated a disposition to learn new systems and software. 

  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
