South Dakota State University (SDSU) Department of Natural Resource Management is offering an exciting career opportunity as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Research and Extension Specialist. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional to join the SDSU West River Research and Extension Center in Rapid City, SD (WRRE). This is a 9-month, full-time position designated as 70% research and 30% extension, benefit eligible, and is supervised by the Department Head of Natural Resource Management.

SDSU is home to the Center of Excellence for Bison Studies, and this position is expected to contribute significantly to the Center through leadership and advisement in research and outreach efforts. Distance technologies connect West River remote faculty with campus and other SDSU remote sites. The faculty member will be expected to participate in and lead collaborations with Department and College faculty and staff located both West River and on-campus. This position is expected to bring expertise in areas complementary to current Department and College research initiatives and collaborative efforts, including grazing ecology, animal health, production, and rangeland sustainability. 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop an externally funded, independent, nationally recognized research program that embraces collaborative multidisciplinary and multi-state activities, and effective dissemination of research results through peer reviewed publications and conference presentations. 
  • Address the unique aspects of bison as a culturally significant wildlife species to be conserved while addressing its importance as a food animal.
  • Develop and disseminate research-based Extension programming and resources in support of state, national. and international bison communities. 
  • Make regular contributions to the SDSU Extension website, a web portal with up-to-date news, application of research findings, and market information combined with resource materials and decision-making aids.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completed Ph.D. in natural resource management or closely related discipline by application date with bison research experience.
  • Postdoctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated record of collaborative research and scholarly activities, including a strong contemporary analytical skill set.
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary approaches on grants/projects that address emerging concerns in the bison conservation and industry.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering programming.
  • Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available for this position

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the bison industry and engagement with bison stakeholder groups.
  • Experience in bringing together, leading, and facilitating learning communities with varied stakeholder groups.
  • Extension experience and the ability to develop innovative, effective, producer outreach programs.
  • Experience in successful grant writing.
  • Experience and a willingness to work collaboratively with heterogenous groups, particularly indigenous communities and sovereign nations culturally affiliated with bison.

The Department of Natural Resource Management is in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences and has B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs. The Department houses the USGS, South Dakota Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. The Department trains students through five undergraduate programs: Conservation Planning and Park Management, Ecology and Environmental Science, Natural Resource Law Enforcement, Rangeland Ecology and Management, and Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences. There are approximately 330 undergraduates and 50 graduate students within the Department. There are currently 19 faculty members in the Department, including 3 USGS Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit scientists, in addition to 3 Extension Field Specialists located throughout the state. Natural Resource Management faculty have secured, on average, $2.5 million in grants annually. The Department also has research support facilities within one mile of campus and at Oak Lake Field Station, approximately 30 minutes away near White, SD.
As the state’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of South Dakota State University is carried out on its main resident campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across South Dakota.
Jackrabbits Athletics competes as an NCAA Division I member with membership in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the Summit League and the Big XII for wrestling.
The position is located at the West River Research and Extension Center (WRRE) in Rapid City, SD. The WRRE is home to faculty members in Natural Resource Management, Animal Science, and Agronomy departments as well as SDSU Extension personnel. Two Agricultural Experiment Station sites are also located in West River – the Cottonwood Field Station near Philip, and the West River Research Farm near Sturgis – that are easily accessible for research, outreach, and teaching purposes. There are numerous bison producers across South Dakota to facilitate outreach efforts aligned with this position.
Located in the foothills of the scenic Black Hills Mountain range, Rapid City is the State’s second largest city, with a population of approximately 68,000. The city has outstanding K-12 schools, major medical facilities, parks, and cultural, outdoor, and tourist amenities. Rapid City is located on the western border of South Dakota and is 400 miles west of the SDSU main campus in Brookings.
