The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology: Dr. Murry General Research Lab has an outstanding opportunity for Assistant Director to join their team.

The University of Washington Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is a dynamic organization, one of the best in the country that has had a consistent level of high achievement in all of its activities. The Department offers full diagnostic service in all areas of pathology and laboratory medicine and is one of the top ranked Departments of Pathology as a recipient of research grant funding National Institutes of Health. Our educational and training programs include the Pathology Residency Training Program, the Molecular Medicine and Mechanisms of Disease Ph.D. and the teaching of medical students, postdoctoral research fellows and clinical fellows.

This position will serve in partnership with Dr. Charles Murry who serves as the Director of Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine (ISCRM) and principal investigator of the Murry laboratory. Dr. Murry also was Founding Director of the UW Medicine Heart Regeneration Program (HRP), with which he and his group continue to work closely. Dr. Murry also is a scientific founder of Sana Biotechnology, which is commercializing the discoveries made by the Murry Laboratory and HRP.  This position will provide direct program administration support for and serve as a representative to Dr. Murry over ISCRM, HRP and the Murry laboratory. This position interfaces closely with Sana Biotechnology and helps manage sponsored research agreements carried out by HRP. This position works under limited supervision and will have the authority to make independent decisions on behalf of the Director, and will have authority in the Director's absence.

This position will work both collaboratively with the Director and other program leaders and independently to oversee the development, maintenance, and implementation of program directives, policies, and procedures. The position will also have direct responsibility for the analysis and management of the Director’s budgets both independently and in partnership with the program Budget Manager(s), as well as make decisions on behalf of the Director regarding any necessary budget related actions, plans, and guidelines. This position will oversee key aspects of research administration, including assisting with and playing a key role in grant submittal, pre-award management, and grant management and analysis. Current funding for HRP, ISCRM and the Murry laboratory is ~$50M/year.

This position requires a high degree of personal initiative; the ability to problem solve independently; a high level of interpersonal skills through verbal communications with faculty, academic personnel, trainees, staff, and the general public.  Expert level computer competency also is required. A successful candidate will likely have had previous experience in either a medical or academic research setting, have the ability to keep the information confidential, and follow established confidentiality procedures. Given the complexities of this position, this role must be willing to work beyond the standard 9-5 work schedule and occasionally participate in activities that extend to evenings or weekends. It is expected that the role will respond to emails, texts, and other communications from the Director after hours in a timely manner.

A grasp of the overall mission and objectives of these Centers, Institutes and Programs is essential, as well as an understanding of how the practical infrastructure and support services must be aligned to maximize the achievement of these objectives. This position will be required to attend high-level meetings and respond to questions from collaborators as well as stakeholders, both internal and external.
