As part of a four-faculty line expansion, the Department of Biology at Saint Louis University is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Microbiology at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, starting in the 2023-24 academic year. The Department welcomes applications from candidates, particularly those from diverse and traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, whose research addresses fundamental questions in areas including, but not limited to bacteriology, virology, mycology, microbial diversity and evolution, microbial ecology, disease ecology, host-pathogen interactions, emerging infectious disease, or antimicrobial resistance. 

  

The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing a robust, externally funded research program, mentoring and advising both undergraduate (B.A. and B.S.) and graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) students, and supporting the service charge of the university. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to the pedagogical mission of the department by instructing students in courses related to microbiology and in their area of expertise; teaching responsibilities may include the development of both undergraduate and graduate lecture and lab courses.

Many opportunities for collaboration are available within our campus, with researchers at SLU’s nearby Health Science Center, at a wide array of world class institutions based in Saint Louis including the Missouri Botanical Gardens, Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Saint Louis Zoo, The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, and with researchers at other local universities and institutes.   

We are seeking candidates with expertise in mentoring students from historically excluded groups, and who have a demonstrated commitment to racial justice.

Candidates must have:  

  • A doctoral degree in microbiology or related area, and postdoctoral experience.  
  • The ability to work and engage effectively with diverse students and faculty.  
  • A record of research productivity.  
  • Demonstrated experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
