Department Physics Department-1106
Job Category Faculty Posting
Position Type Full-Time
Position Details
The Physics Department at Wesleyan University is seeking to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin July 1, 2023. We invite applications from candidates with promise for developing an independent, sustainably funded research program in applied physics with an experimental component that involves both graduate and undergraduate researchers. Candidates should consider how their research could create synergy with groups in the physics department, the Integrated Design, Engineering, Art, and Society (IDEAS) program and other programs on campus. Research areas of particular interest include but are not limited to materials science, photonics, metamaterials, soft-matter, fluid dynamics, quantum information, environmental physics, and semiconductor physics. A focus on contributing to global sustainability and an ability to contribute to research teams are desirable.
Candidates should be able to teach across the physics curriculum (including at the graduate level) and teach courses in the IDEAS program at Wesleyan. The successful candidate will collaborate with IDEAS faculty and contribute to the development of the Design & Engineering program.
Wesleyan offers a unique opportunity to thrive in a PhD-granting department at a leading liberal arts university, providing significant institutional support in the form of start-up funds, a one course per semester teaching load plus complementing seminars, and graduate assistant support. Substantial machine shop, analytical instrumentation, and computational resources are available. Collegial faculty interaction includes significant career mentoring, participation in pedagogical innovation, and a shared commitment to the promotion of inclusion and diversity in physics and the University.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have a PhD, and preferably postdoctoral research experience in physics or a related field, by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. within one year of hire.
