Position Summary
Responsible for promoting the Research Ethics and Compliance efforts of the University and contributing to a culture of compliance that results in the ethical, responsible and objective conduct of research, appropriate stewardship of funds, protection of research participants and employees. Responsible for assuring university-wide compliance with federal laws, agency regulations, and university policies by interpreting complex research and regulatory issues, developing appropriate policies, procedures, educational programs, information systems, monitoring programs and reporting.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee and direct the administrative support for assigned committees. Work closely with others to ensure proper procedures are followed to comply with applicable laws, regulations and policies. Assure that the necessary reports to federal agencies and sponsors are submitted.
  • Assure the appropriate documentation of committee deliberations, activities, findings, actions and reports are maintained. In addition, assure appropriate reporting and notifications are provided to federal, state, sponsor or regulatory agencies when applicable.
  • Direct appropriate and necessary implementation of Conflict of Interest Policies with all other affected compliance offices including but not limited to the Office of Sponsored Research including grants and contracts, Human Research Protection Office, Office of Technology Management, Institutional Conflict of Interest.
  • Oversee the conduct of investigations into allegations of non-compliance including the development of corrective plans and implementation of sanctions or monitoring.
  • Develop, revise and maintain compliance policies and procedures necessary to support the ethical and responsible conduct of research at the University. Assure timely and appropriate dissemination of information about new policies and procedures to the research community. Oversee the regular assessment of policies and procedures to assure that risks are assessed and mitigated, measures compliance and identifies opportunities for improved efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Monitor federal and sponsoring agency policies, regulations and initiatives as well as university policies and procedures to assure that the research compliance program is up-to date and effective.
  • Direct the development, revision and maintenance of educational content and communication strategies for faculty, staff, students, postdoctoral appointees and other impacted individuals to assure individual, programmatic and institutional compliance.
  • Direct the monitoring of compliance programs to assure that impacted faculty, staff, students and postdoctoral appointees are meeting their expectations for protocol submission, financial disclosure, training, and responding to mandatory management plans and reporting.
  • Direct the development and implementation of various technology systems and tools to facilitate and support faculty and staff efforts to comply with regulations, policies, procedures and WU compliance requirements. Oversee the University compliance systems to assure appropriate functionality, content and effectiveness. Contribute to the University’s efforts to facilitate an integrated compliance infrastructure for University faculty and staff.
  • Represent the university to federal agencies, sponsoring programs and auditors and coordinate any necessary response to their inquiries.
  • Work closely with other compliance and research- related offices to understand and integrate the concepts of responsible and ethical conduct of research programs.
  • Develop, train, oversee and monitor the work of all departmental personnel to assure compliance with regulations, policies and procedures. Provide opportunities for professional development and growth.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

 

Working Conditions

  • Primarily office space, computer work and some travel between various buildings and offices throughout the University.
  • Travel to national meetings one to two times a year.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field.
  • Experience in managing research information systems, websites and other tools necessary to support compliance programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage confidential information, work independently and exercise good judgment.
  • Excellent attention to details.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to deal with heavy volume, deadlines and multiple projects.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with many levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex relationships.


Required Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Five to seven years’ experience in research administration, preferably in a research-intensive university, hospital or health institute.
  • Demonstrated understanding of a regulatory environment and ability to interpret regulations and policy.
  • Two to three years supervisor experience, three to five years preferred.

Salary Range
$77,700.00 - $136,700.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
