Description

The Biology Department at Western Carolina University is seeking applications for a tenure-track, 9-month faculty position in Plant Ecology at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 1, 2023. The successful candidate will have research focusing on plant population, community or landscape structure and dynamics. Approaches could include ecological modeling; molecular, ecophysiological, or landscape analysis; experimental ecology; or field sampling and analysis. Preferred applicants will take advantage of the research opportunities found in the biologically diverse southern Appalachians. Teaching responsibilities will include introductory, upper- and graduate-level courses in ecology and other courses in the candidate’s specialty. An active, funded research program involving undergraduates and master’s students will be essential for success in this position. Western Carolina University is a regional comprehensive university of the University of North Carolina System located in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina about an hour drive west of Asheville, NC. The Biology Department is in a new state-of-the-art science building that also houses the Chemistry and Physics Department. Physical resources include a greenhouse, herbarium, ecologophysiological and field sampling instrumentation, and molecular biology instrumentation. Field research and teaching at WCU benefits from access to the university’s field station, Highlands Biological Station, and by the campus’ proximity to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests, Coweeta Hydrological Lab, and other USDA Forest Service Labs. Review of applications will begin on or about November 15, 2022 and continue until a candidate has been selected. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to public engagement through their teaching, service, and scholarship.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Biology or a related field from an accredited institution, a demonstrated record of scholarly productivity, and the expectation of continued scholarship. Preferred qualification include having postdoctoral research, teaching, or work experience that actively engage undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants with teaching experience at the undergraduate level and who demonstrate research projects/products that actively engage undergraduate and graduate students will be given preference.
