Job Summary
The Staff Research Associate II (SRA II) will be a member of a cooperative research effort in the Chiu laboratory at UCSF China Basin to:
(1) develop and validate novel assays for the diagnosis of infectious diseases and
(2) characterize emerging pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2,
(3) identifying host response biomarkers of severity.
The key tool is unbiased next-generation sequencing for pathogen detection and host transcriptomics.
The candidate will be working closely with senior postdoctoral fellows and researchers in the laboratory to
(1) validate target probe and CRISPR enrichment platforms to diagnose infections such as tickborne infections,
(2) characterize host biomarker of infection (e.g., COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2) from patient samples,
(3) develop novel metagenomic assays, and
(4) use metagenomic sequencing of patient cohorts to discover new viruses and pathogens.

Department Description
The Department of Laboratory Medicine at UCSF is dedicated to clinical service, research and teaching.
Required Qualifications
• BA/BS degree in biology, chemistry, or related natural science, including significant laboratory course work in biology, biochemistry; and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Prior experience in working with DNA/RNA in molecular biology, including cloning, PCR, and nucleic acid extraction
• Prior experience in genomics – deep sequencing and/or microarrays
• Some experience in a genomics-related laboratory
• Willingness to work with biohazardous material at Biosafety Level 2
Preferred Qualifications
• Skills and knowledge in the use of biorobots and/or miniaturized microfluidics platforms
• Computational background in genomics and bioinformatics
• Skills and knowledge in diagnostic assay development
• Background in computational biology
