Scholarship information

Sid and Cathy Bacon established this scholarship endowment in June 2013 to recognize Sid Bacon’s 25-year career of teaching and research as an auditory psychophysicist at Arizona State University. Sid came to ASU in 1988, after teaching at Vanderbilt University for two years. Sid served as a professor of speech and hearing science, as chair of the Department of Speech and Hearing Science, as dean of the Natural Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and as associate vice president in the Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development. He earned a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology and audiology and a master’s in audiology at the University of Kansas and a doctorate in experimental psychology from the University of Minnesota. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge in England and Boys Town National Research hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of Sid's career was teaching. He felt a deep and abiding commitment to his students as a professor and mentor. The scholarship is designed to assist future undergraduate students who are dedicated to the profession of speech and hearing science and are involved in a research experience. Sid had a passion for research and hoped that the scholarship would allow another student to benefit from research and contribute to the field of speech or audiology, similar to his own experience as an undergraduate
