Senior Instrument Maker

Arts and Sciences | Chemistry and Biochemistry Administration

Provides machine shop support in the new College of Arts and Sciences Machine Shop for approximately 100 faculty, 120 research staff and Postdoctoral Researchers, and several hundred graduate students primarily within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Department of Physics. Fabricates instruments and/or parts from metal, plastics or ceramics; works from CAD drawings, rough sketches, or verbal instruction from faculty, Postdoctoral Researchers, and graduate students on the design, construction, modification or repair of instruments or equipment for scientific research and instruction; sets up and operates precision computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools; lays out materials and integrates purchased parts into equipment; joins fabricated parts by welding, soldering and brazing. Provides estimates on time needed to complete jobs; calculates amounts and prices of materials needed; assists in purchasing and maintaining shop inventory and supplies; serves as backup for supervisor if needed. Repairs and/or modifies existing scientific lab and teaching equipment to meet original or improved performance specifications. Instructs faculty, staff and students in skills and proper procedures of tools and equipment specifications. Maintains machine shop equipment and tools in good working order; keeps work area in clean, orderly and safe condition; performs other duties as assigned.

Required Experience: Extensive experience (3-5 years) as precision research instrument maker.

Desired Experience/Qualifications (Optional): MasterCAM CNC software experience, CAD software experience, computer numerical control (CNC) machining experience; welding, soldering and brazing experience; previous supervisory experience

Additional Information:

Salary Range: $22.16- $29.56/hourly
