Essential Job Duties

The Disability Resource Office at NC State is seeking candidates to fill at least 4 openings for American Sign Language Interpreters to assist deaf students by facilitating communication in the classroom, for meetings, and other events.

The interpreter processes information quickly, and concisely and recognizes sensitive cultural differences. The interpreter is professional and courteous at all times and uses appropriate terminology and understands common industry procedures and practices. The interpreting sessions may involve simple or complex, technical or non-technical subjects.

This position does not involve written translation however translators and other skilled linguists are encouraged to apply. The Interpreters translate verbally

  • We are seeking qualified, experienced, freelance Educational American Sign Language Interpreters to provide interpreting services in various educational settings.
  • Sign language interpreters are skilled professional interpreters placed in the classroom to promote effective cross-cultural communication in every field of study.
  • Makes every effort to communicate spoken information meaning-for-meaning and communicate the information in the manner in which it is intended.
  • Assists by voicing comments or questions communicated in a mutually agreed upon manner.
  • Responsible for facilitation of communication between the student and others (the professor, other students, etc.).
  • Familiar with the scheduled lecture by preparing for the class by reviewing the textbook and related materials.
  • Interpret multimedia elements shown in class. Performs other site and position-specific responsibilities as assigned.
  • Respond to the interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Render correct concepts and meanings according to the conventions of established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
  • Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the interpreting sessions at all times.
  • Remain calm during interpreting sessions in the event that one of the primary speakers is incoherent or upset, especially in emergency situations such as 911 calls.
  • Maintain punctuality and availability during work hours.
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and working in a diverse environment.
  • Render correct concepts and meanings according to the conventions of established interpretation protocol
  • Provide clear and accurate renditions with no additions or omissions
  • Follow the client’s instructions, manage the flow of the communication, avoid taking over the communication, as well as avoid interaction with the Limited English proficiency speaker without the client’s permission

Work Schedule

Flexible: Monday-Friday, 8am-8pm (2-10 hours a week on an as needed basis)

Minimum Experience/Education

High School diploma or equivalency and five years of experience, a Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience, or equivalent years of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Department Required Skills

  • Excellent proficiency in the English Language and must have good listening skills.
  • Ability to understand and summarize information
  • Sign language skills.
  • Pleasant and professional voice as well as polite forms of expression
  • Provide clarification and cultural brokering using excellent judgment and skill
  • Education or work experience in language-related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation preferred.
  • Excellent listening, retention, and note-taking skills to maintain a high level of accuracy during interpretation.
  • Experience working in a college classroom setting
