About the Department

The National Science Foundation Center for Integrated Pest Management (NSFCIPM) was established in 1991 to serve a lead role in technology development, program implementation, training, and public awareness for IPM at the state, regional, and national level. NSFCIPM fosters the development and implementation of pest management programs. NSF CIPM is an Industry / University Cooperative Research Center, which works to support and further Integrated Pest Management through the evaluation of emerging technologies, information management and dissemination, environmental stewardship, estimation of economic consequences, resistance management tools and systems, and integration of disciplinary expertise. The Center manages grants programs for the USDA, develops regional and national priorities through workshops and stakeholder meetings, and develops and maintains large databases and database applications for USDA, EPA, and Ministries of Agriculture in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean.

The Center for Integrated Pest Management (CIPM) fosters the development and implementation of pest management programs based on a high level of knowledge of pest biology coupled with choices of monitoring tools and control technology, resulting in economically sound, environmentally compatible, and sociologically responsible pest management in diverse systems including both crop production and urban settings. CIPM is a National Science Foundation founded, Industry / University Cooperative Research Center, which works to support and further Integrated Pest Management through the evaluation of emerging technologies, information management and dissemination, environmental stewardship, estimation of economic consequences, resistance management tools and systems, and integration of disciplinary expertise.

Essential Job Duties

As a Research Scholar, this position will join a dynamic research team focusing on original plant epidemiological research. The team focuses on a wide range of topics including emerging pathogens, early detection, risk based modeling, pest forecasting, evaluation of optimal management strategies and the development of novel quantitative tools for plant health management.

This position will be responsible for expanding the frontiers of epidemiological research, especially with respect to the creation and application of advanced quantitative and mathematical techniques. This position will be expected to work in a team environment and be able to generate new ideas and solutions for important research problems impacting U.S. agriculture.

Other work/responsibilities of this position include:
  • Design, develop and validate mathematical and statistical models, methods and/or techniques appropriate to the research goals.
  • Construct, optimize and maintain source code.
  • Develop front-end user interfaces for data visualization and model deployment to stakeholders.
  • Perform advanced statistical analyses and compose narrative reports to accompany results.
  • Publish findings from experiments in peer-reviewed manuscripts and technical reports.
  • Present research results at professional meetings.
  • Contribute to creation of presentations, manuscripts, and funding proposals.

This position is located in Fort Pierce, FL.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. (or relevant terminal degree), in Plant Pathology, Ecology, Biology, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Biostatistics, or a related field with at least 3 years of relevant experience that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success with complex and quantitative research problems that require an interdisciplinary or team-based approach.
  • Knowledge of applied mathematics, biostatistics, quantitative or statistical methods, experimental design, modeling and simulation, programming, epidemiology, and data analytics.
  • Demonstrated experience with one or more statistical programming language (R, SAS, Python).
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint (or similar software).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in plant pathology and disease epidemiology.
  • Familiarity with spatial statistics and geospatial tools (e.g. ArcGIS).
  • Experience in front-end development (Shiny).
  • Experience with git/Github or equivalent version control systems.
  • Strong technical communication skills (written and oral).
