Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The IT Systems Analyst utilizes advanced Linux system administration knowledge and skills to manage the core infrastructure of approximately 150 physical servers and networking devices to advance the academic and research mission of the computer science department at the University of Maryland, College Park. As a member of a small team of IT professionals, the IT systems analyst provides a secure, reliable and highly available environment by installing, configuring, integrating and troubleshooting Red Hat Enterprise servers and software including but not limited to: identity management (IdM), puppet server, kernel-based virtual machines (KVM), database administration (MariaDB), web administration(Apache), gitLab, DHCP, VPN, CUPS, and backups. The system administrator applies knowledge of networking principles to ensure the proper integration and communication among servers clustered by function and troubleshoots and problem-solves within an environment that changes frequently to meet the needs of a highly-ranked computer science department.The IT Systems Analyst offers the highest level of customer service to the community of faculty, staff, and graduate students by ably managing desktop machines across Linux, Windows, and Mac operating systems, by responding to help desk service requests at the higher tiers and by mentoring student IT staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field plus 5 years of successful experience in system administration and customer support.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for a degree.

Experience:
  • Linux system administration experience at an advanced skill-level.
  • Experience supporting 100+ computers and 100+ users.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proficient use of Linux commands commonly used by Linux system administrators.
  • Proficient use of a programming/scripting language commonly used to automate routine system administration tasks, e.g., shell scripting, Ruby, perl, python.
  • Comfortable working with version control, preferably Git
  • Familiar with using SSH and certificates
  • Willingness to learn and administer Windows and Mac OS systems.
  • Must be able to participate in a 24/7/365 on-call rotation with the team

Preferences:

Preferred Experience with the Following Technologies: 
  • puppet, git, LDAP, KVM, mysql, apache, postfix and other mail protocols, network file system (NFS), ActiveDirectory, nagios, VLAN, DNS, DHCP, VPN, firewall, Brocade switches and backup system.
  • SQL and database administration
  • Administration experience with Windows Server or JAMF.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Sets goals and meets deadlines. Self-motivated.
  • Able to multitask and monitor various modes of communication simultaneously, i.e. email, chat, ticketing system.
  • Must be able to tolerate disruptions.
  • Customer-service oriented
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of training users in applications and operating system fundamentals and writing basic documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of personal initiative, especially with respect to problem solving.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies, tools and software.
  • High level of attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Enjoys working with a team. Able to work independently.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

Physical Demands

  • Predominantly operates in an office environment. Teleworking may be an option after successful completion of a probationary period for new hires.
  • When participating in lifting and racking servers, brief periods of time are spent in the cooler temperatures and noisier environment of the datacenter.
  • Installation or servicing of office equipment may involve crawling under desks, lifting and carrying monitors and desktop computers and pushing equipment carts.
  • Available 7 days/week as part of an on-call rotation.
