Southside Virginia Community College is seeking a motivated 9-month History/Political Science faculty member to teach 100 and 200 level undergraduate History courses and support institutional advancement with program review and assessment to support student learning. The successful candidate must be committed to our mission to provide quality education to a diverse constituency. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

Teaching and student advising. Classes taught may be a combination of day, night and/or weekends and a combination of seated, online, or hybrid. Classes may be located on or off campus, possibly in local high schools, or in a correctional center across locations served by the college. The annual teaching load for this position is 15 credit hours (each) for Fall and Spring semesters. Other duties include serving on committees and advising students, participating in professional activities, mentoring full-time and part-time instructors, and may include program development and assessment.

Other duties as assigned.

SVCC is located in a rural setting of rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland. There is easy access to nearby metropolitan Richmond, Virginia, the state’s capital, as well as Raleigh, North Carolina, and Lynchburg, Virginia. The area is famous for its two lakes, Gaston and Kerr, and a multitude of state and national parks which offer recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, skiing, jet-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, picnics, and relaxation. The area also offers sports arenas for baseball, softball, soccer and beautiful golf courses. There are cultural activities including various theaters and arts councils offering concerts, plays, and live entertainment, and there are many local festivals held throughout the year.

 

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in History or Political Science or Master’s with 18 credit hours in History or Political Science (If degree in one discipline prefer an additional 18 graduate credits in opposite to allow flexibility. If no additional credits in the opposite discipline, will allow 2 years to gain additional credentials.)
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in online and face-to-face modalities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with others in a variety of different areas
  • Must possess the ability to work effectively with a culturally and educationally diverse student population
  • Competency in and dedication to the use of instructional technologies
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and time management skills
  • Strong self-motivation
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings and may require teaching of dual enrollment student

Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching experience at the college level
