Position description

The Ackerly Lab in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar to develop innovative analyses of the potential impacts of climate change on plant biodiversity, with a focus on the flora of California or the western US, and the implications for conservation and protected area management.

The scholar will pursue one project addressing spatial patterns in projected and observed change in environmental conditions and vegetation (including climate refugia), and one or more projects to be developed collaboratively and reflecting the scholar's personal research interests. The scholar will also be expected to share their expertise and contribute to mentoring graduate students and undergraduates in the lab. This position reports to Professor David Ackerly, Dean of Rausser College of Natural Resources and Professor in Integrative Biology.
Research in the Ackerly Lab addresses varied aspects of plant ecology and evolution in relation to climate change, and the significance for conservation. Projects include species distribution analysis, studies of adaptive genetic variation, and long-term research on fire effects and post-fire vegetation recovery.

This position will involve designing and executing original research projects, data management, data analysis, manuscript preparation, presenting research, contributing to grant proposals, and mentoring students.
The position will develop and troubleshoot new analytic techniques and pursue exciting and fundamental questions at the intersection of ecology, climate change, and conservation.

Within UC Berkeley, the successful candidate will have opportunities to interact with researchers in multiple academic units, including environmental science, policy, and management; integrative biology; the Institute for Parks, People, and Biodiversity; and others. Outside Berkeley, there are multiple opportunities to collaborate with the Terrestrial Biodiversity and Climate Change Collaborative, CA Biodiversity Network, UC Natural Reserve System, etc.

The department is interested in candidates who will contribute to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
